Health week in Nursery

Oral health

We read a book about how to make sure your teeth stay clean.  We also sang a song called ‘Brush your teeth’.  We then made our own information books about brushing teeth.

BBC School Radio: Nursery songs and rhymes - Brush your teeth

Mental health

We read a book called ‘Sometimes I feel sunny’.  We talked about our feelings and looked at expressions.  We talked about what makes us sad and what makes us happy.  We sang ‘If you’re happy and you know it’

Body fitness

We had a go at some yoga.  The children were very good at trying the different stretches and poses.

Nutrition

The parents came in to make fruit kebabs with their children.  It was a lovely session.  The classroom was filled with the delicious smells of melon, pineapple, mango, bananas and apples.

Jigsaw – Year 2

Changing me
05/07/18
Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Circle time with Jigsaw Jo in a circle. Jigsaw Jo is holding s feely bag (the bag contains: pebbles, sandpaper, play doh, pine cone and a plastic dinosaur toy). Asked a child to come and feel an object and asked them to describe it e.g smooth, rough, spiky, soft etc., and asked them to say whether they like the feel or not. Then I asked a few other children to do the same and asked them how it feels to the person holding it. Made the point that we may or may not like the feel of something and it is good to be able to say what we think.

Calm me

Shared the picture cards with children: baby lying down, a baby crawling, a toddler walking, a five year old running, a ten year old skipping. In groups, I asked the children to place them in sequence. I reinforced the learning that as we physically grow we also do more things.
On Flipchart, I drew the stem and on centre of a flower. Added one petal and stick the first picture (baby) into it. Drew the second petal and asked the children which picture should go in next (baby crawling). Continued until the flower is complete, helping children to understand that every time we learn something new we add a little bit onto ourselves, like adding a petal to a flower.

Health Week in Year 3

Year 3 have been learning about keeping healthy this week. We have learnt about how muscles work and different ways to exercise safely. We investigated and wrote some fantastic explanation texts.

We want to say a big thank you to the parents who were able to come and support the workshop on Wednesday. Year 3 learnt about the importance of healthy eating, using a knife and making a balanced meal.

We also learnt about the importance of mental health and well being. We did some yoga, meditation and mindfulness activities.

Health Week.

This Week has been health week where we have been learning about different aspects of keeping ourselves healthy.

We have been discussing the importance of exercise, eating the right foods and how to keep our teeth healthy. We have been writing explanation texts and instructions for how to prevent tooth decay. We have also found out the importance our of mental well being and how to look after our mind.

On Thursday, KS1 held a parent workshop so the children and parents could find out more about these topics. There were 7 activities that the children had to complete in order to get their ‘healthy lifestyle’ award.

All the children had lots of fun learning new things and the parents were extremely supportive and helpful. Thank you to all who came!

Year 5 Health week

In Health Week, year 5 focussed on eating. We made healthy flapjacks, wrote explanations of the digestive system and painted healthy fruit. Painting the fruit with watercolours gave us a chance to consider our mental health as well as we concentrated on peace and relaxation. Parents joined us for this session and even little sisters joined in with the painting. Thank you everyone who came.

Jigsaw – Year 4

Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Working in groups of four the children agreed on four changes they are looking forward to when they go to year 5. On their spinning top cube template, they wrote changes on the four sides of the cube. This was then cut out and made into a spinning top using a pencil as the spindle.
