To celebrate World Book Day, Year 5 spent the afternoon discovering new authors. First there was a mystery- three books wrapped in brown paper. We read a part of each one and discussed which we prefered and what they might be about. Eventually, we voted and Sputnik became our new class reader. Then we chose from a number of new books to sit and share with our friends.
We also had a chance to share our favourite books from home with each other as well as with a visiting Year 4.
Our reading corner display now shows the new authors we discovered and will hopefully inspire us to try even more.
We normally do Forest School sessions whatever the weather but at -4 degrees celcius it was just too cold today for a normal session.
We went outside to the Forest School area to have a look at the new trees. Whilst we were outside we heard a bird singing. We looked up and saw it in the tree. We watched it for a while so that we could identify when we went back inside. When we checked we found out it was a song thrush. This is really good news as these are declining in England.
We then had a walk around the school grounds to collect fire wood ready for a fire next session. We are lucky to have some silver birch trees around school. Silver birch bark and small branches are really good for camp fires.
We then came inside to warm up and carried on with our Forest School activities.
We used a potato peeler to peel the bark from branches. Mrs Grant explained that it is easier to peel bark if the wood is freshly cut or green. You can check this by scraping your finger nail on the branch to see if it is green underneath.
We then decorated our sticks.
We are hoping for warmer weather next week so that we can go back to normal.
On Tuesday Year 4 were given the opportunity to take part in a History Hunt at the Birmingham Town Hall. On our arrival we were visited by Mr.P, who was a detective and he gave us a mission to carry out. Our quest was to find as many clues as possible which were scattered around the Birmingham Town Hall and use these clues to solve the mystery, save the Town Hall from destruction and find the suspect. All the children had lots of fun examining historical artefacts, learning new historical facts and going back in time to have a taste of life during different periods in history.
Here are some pictures of all the fun which we had on our trip.
Everyone, including the adults took part the Calm me activity to help make sure we’re ready to learn.
The children then read through stem sentences in their Jigsaw Journals and wrote spontaneous answers to each question.
We then took part in Tell me or show me. The children worked through a picture resource sheet.
Once the children had enough time to answer the questions, the teacher then displayed a set of pictures. Whichever group had the same pictures, had to share their answers.

The children then listed the good/positive about things that are the same and what is good/positive about the things that are different. The children were encouraged to see difference as something to celebrate.
For Open my mind, pictures of the royal family are placed on the white board and then we asked who are they? How are they connected? Then we looked at photos of other families which showed single parents, mixed race, etc to show how families are all different.

To finish off our topic, Year 2 had a fantastic pirate day where we all dressed up as pirates and started our own pirate crews!
We started off by practising our own sea shanties that we had written ourselves …. (photos to come!) Then we made our own telescopes and treasure chests so that we could hunt for treasure and have somewhere to store our gleaming booty – shiver me timbers!
After lunch we went on our very own treasure hunt – where there’s gold, we’re a goin’!

The children worked through their culture wheel and then compared their wheel with the other wheels in the class. This helped them to understand what cultural differences and similarities they shared.
For ‘Tell Me or Show Me’, the class was divided into 6 groups. Each were given a blank culture wheel and a picture of a child. They then completed the culture wheel as if they were the child in the picture. Every group shared their wheel and were then told that all the children in the picture lived in the UK and were British citizens.
