Over the past few weeks, we have been observing the changes to the Troll cress heads that we have planted. We have been watering the cress, and made sure that we placed them in direct sunlight. When they were fully grown, we cut the cress and mixed it with boiled egg and mayonnaise. We made sandwiches and took them outside for a picnic! They were delicious!
During Maths week we made biscuits and sold them at our fair to raise money for Christian Aid. We used grid method to scale up the recipe and we worked to a budget. We practice fractions by finding fractions of amounts and fractions of shapes. We used this knowledge to ice fractions of our biscuits. We sold our biscuits for 30p each or four for £1.
During Maths Week Year 6 completed many activities all based around ‘Talk for Maths’ where children were able to develop mathematical language, through speaking and listening activities. Children completed a range of problem solving tasks, looked at profits, pricing, budgeting and created canvas artwork and bracelets (with a mathematical concept) to sell at the St.Clement’s Charity Fundraiser at the end of the week.
As this week was also Christian Aid and Islamic Relief Week, we also completed research on the both of the charities and the great work they do all over the world.

Year One have been exploring capacity.
We invited our parents into the classroom to see what we have been learning about.
We were looking at the language of capacity including empty, nearly empty, half empty, half full, nearly full and full.
We used the laptops to explore which container held more water.
We used our problem solving skills and the new language we had learnt to see whether we could put the glasses in the correct order.
We really enjoyed measuring capacity using a cup as a non-standard measure. The children loved pouring the water into the cups.
The School Council met this week to discuss the safety within the community. We have decided to contact the local police, in the hope they will support us in applying for speed bumps along Butlin Street. Thank you to all the people who have signed the petition in the school office, every name helps! If you would like to sign a petition see a member of the School Council, or see the staff in the main school office.
As part of our community work we have decided to carry out a community litter pick. This will help keep Nechells tidy and make our streets safe. We hope to carry this out soon, so watch this space!

This week is Christian Aid and Maths week.
Year 2 have been learning about the ways that Christian Aid have helped communities in Sierra Leone. We learned how it helped the whole community to grow stronger and build respect for each other.
We read the Bible verse:
‘Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance’ 1 Corinthians 13:7.
We reflected on what it means and how it relates to Christian Aid and the things we have found out.
On Thursday, we had a fantastic parent workshop. We have been learning about co-ordinates. Our parents helped us to read co-ordinates and plot co-ordinates. We created our own pirate treasure maps. We also played Battleships!
It’s maths week! It was great to welcome parents into school to join in with our activities on Tuesday morning. Thanks to everyone who was able to come. This week we have continued to work around aspects of the story We’re going on a bear hunt . Everyone joined in with a number hunt in our outdoor area . We sequenced the sections of the story by matching and painting by numbers. We also carried out an investigation into finding out our favourite part of the book. We have done lots of counting and sorting. We ordered teddy bears from smallest to largest. In addition to this we have completed our clay pieces in the style of Barbara Hepworth., which the children have really enjoyed doing. This links into the cave and sea scape featured in the story. Barbara Hepworth was a famous artist and sculptor who was born in Wakefield in 1903 and died in St Ives in 1975.
It has been a super busy week in Reception! We have been taking part in lots of maths activities including a workshop with our parents, exploring the shapes in Kandinsky’s art, taking part in a maths outside trail and also making our very own human bar chart!
On Tuesday, we had our lovely parents in to help with our maths investigation. Jack and the Giant had left their smelly socks in our classroom. We had to find out if Jack’s or the Giant’s sock could fit more cubes in it. We used our estimation skills, and careful counting to find this out! We all enjoyed the other maths activities, especially picking out numbers found in the Giant’s snot!
Year 3 have spent time this week with our new school nurse in learning the importance of washing our hands properly. After washing our hands, we rubbed in a special cream that would show where any germs were left when our hands were held under an ultra violet light. Where it glows white, it means there are still germs present and hands have not been washed properly.
