Year 5 Health week

In Health Week, year 5 focussed on eating. We made healthy flapjacks, wrote explanations of the digestive system and painted healthy fruit. Painting the fruit with watercolours gave us a chance to consider our mental health as well as we concentrated on peace and relaxation. Parents joined us for this session and even little sisters joined in with the painting. Thank you everyone who came.

Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.

At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Carrying on from last week children had to finish off their spinning tops. working individually each child focused on one of the year 6 changes from their spinning top and drew on the ideas shared in the group, worked through that change writing the progress on a circle of change template.

Year 5 investigate jelly

Following on from their work investigating which substances were soluble,  year 5 generated their own questions about whether they could speed up the rate at which substances dissolved.  We worked in groups to choose a question to investigate and see if we could make jelly dissolve faster. Groups investigated whether the size of the piece of jelly affected the rate or the temperature of the water or the number of times it was stirred. We recorded our observations and the time taken to completely dissolve before writing a conclusion.

Sitting in a circle, using Jigsaw Jez as the talking object, children had to complete the stem sentence:’ one thing I am really looking forward to in year 6 is…
Working in groups of four the children agreed on four changes they are looking forward to when they go to year 6. On their spinning top cube template, they wrote changes on the four sides of the cube. This was then cut out and made into a spinning top using a pencil as the spindle.

year 5 staying safe

On Thursday, year 5 had a visit from the nurse with important information. They learnt all about the dangers of alcohol, smoking and drugs and joined in a discussion about how to avoid peer pressure and stay safe. It was a very informative session and the children had lots of questions for the nurse.

Invited the children to design their own card about what they are looking forward to in becoming a teenager. Asked them to think about how their card compares to the original ones. Inside their card, asked the children to think about what advice they would give to the recipient about coping with the changes being a teenager brings. Asked children to write three bullet points of advice and a positive message.

In small groups, children examine a selection of birthday cards for 13 year olds and discussed what are those cards telling us about how the designer sees the age of 13/13th birthday? What are the perceptions of 13 year olds shown in these cards? I asked the children to sort the cards into those they think reflect reality and those they think are unrealistic.
Each group picked one card they think best reflects what being a teenager means to them.

Year 5 science experiments

Year 5 have just started a new topic- Alchemy Island. Over the next half term, we will be investigating the world of alchemy, discovering gold and changing materials. We began this week by learning about solutions. We carried out an investigation to discover which materials were soluble and which were insoluble. We made predictions and observed the changes when we added the substance to the water. There were some surprises.
