This week Year 5 and 6 worked together this week because it was residential.
The week was themed around the Paralympics.
We researched Paralympics, making notes. We then wrote their biography’s. We also wrote a report about the Paralympics, transforming notes into a piece of non-fiction writing.
We did art in the style of Romero Britto, a famous Brazilian artist. We used an atlas to find out where Paralympians were from, we found it hard to find the countries on our world maps even though we tried to be very accurate.
We discussed what it would be like to compete in the Paralympics. We also played sitting down volleyball. It was lots of fun but it was really hard to not move for the ball!
This week, Year 5 have been learning how we are all different and what makes us special. They were able to discuss, in large groups, the similarities and differences between the Dot Com characters.
Circle time games, helped the children to talk about how they were different and also special. The children were able to share their opinions and show respect for others in whole class discussions.
Together, we answered the questions… What is teasing? If we are different to others, does that mean we can not get along? Can people feel lonely, if they are different? How can we help people, who feel hurt because of difference?
Next week, we will be welcoming some visitors, who will be helping us learn more about the emergency services.
Year 5 had a great PSHE lesson discussing and getting to know the Dot Com characters. The children split into groups and identified key facts about Dot’s friends and family. They were able to talk and share ideas about the challenges the characters might face, how they could deal with them and the advise they would offer them.
Next week, Year 5 will be looking at that differences and similarities between people and how these arise. They will also be looking at Article 30 of the the Children’s Rights handbook. ” Every child has the right to use their language, customs and religion of their family regardless of whether these are shared by the majority of people in the country where they live.”
During Roald Dahl Week Year 5 have read one of Roald Dahl’s famous books ‘The Witches’. The children really enjoyed the story and all the work which we covered based on the book. During the week the were given the opportunity be reporters and created a news report on the disappearance of the children in the story. Children also created a guide on ‘How to recognise a witch’, artwork where they were transformed themselves into witches in the story and solved maths problems related to a range of Roald Dahl stories.
Being the last week of term, we’ve decided to have some more practical and investigative lessons in Year 5. Today, the class were challenged to build the tallest tower they could using… spaghetti and marshmallows. The class split into teams of three and they were all given approximately 30 pieces of spaghetti and 12 marshmallows. We first spent 10 minutes experimenting with designs before feeding back ideas as to what worked well. The teams then had 20 minutes to build the tallest tower they could, that could support its own height. The winning design measured 43cm!
Over the past two weeks, Year 5 have been looking at persuasive arguments in literacy. On Tuesday this week, we had the chance to debate a number of motions to help us with using persuasive language and how to structure an argument. The motions we debated were Art is better than PE; Zoos should be banned; and Children should be able to learn to drive form the age of 10. For each debate we had a proposition and an opposition team. Both teams had time to research their argument before writing it up. They then debated against each other before the rest of the class voted on which side they agreed with.
Last week in maths we looked at reflection and translation of shapes. The class found this really interesting as it also gave us the opportunity to get practical with our learning. Below are pictures of us practising translating and reflected our shapes on large grids.
Year Fives new topic for this half term is Time Traveller.
As part of our topic we are discovering what we looked like back in time. Can you guess which of these babies are our current Year 5? Can you find Mrs Webster and Mrs Austin-Smith?
Year 5 had a fantastic day at Aston University competing in the Aston Olympics. They took part in lots of different sports including football, bench ball, gym session, obstacle course and water polo. The classes favourite sport was water polo.
We were presented with a certificate for the school and one each to keep.
