Year 3: The King of the Fishes

Year 3 have been learning a new narrative ‘The King of the Fishes’. We created actions to help us remember the story and will be practicing and getting to know the story very well for the next few weeks. Here is the story map that we use to help us and a video of our story telling.

Can you practice more at home?

Can you retell the story in your home language?

Can you look up these words in a dictionary?

  • humble
  • remote
  • guilty
  • shimmer
  • grant
  • cradle

Learning all about Rivers in Year 3

Year 3 have started our new topic ‘Flow’ and will be learning all about rivers this term. We began the week by learning Valerie Bloom’s poem ‘The River’ and listening to this song about the journey of the river:

In literacy we been learning about poetic devices, such as rhyme, alliteration, repetition, similes and metaphors. We then created our own poems about rivers. We worked collaboratively with partners to plan and write our river poems. Then we performed and gave each other feedback.

Here are some poems written by Year 3 children:

Jigsaw – Year 3

Changing me
Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Showed the children PowerPoint slides of baby pictures only. Asked the children to share their thoughts about the pictures and using Jigsaw Jino as the talking object, shared their feelings about the pictures.
Then showed a couple of slides on the PowerPoint of a mother and baby. Shared the reading book ‘my new baby’
We discussed and asked children to think about how it feels/might feel to have
Newborn baby and how the baby needs to be looked after.

Into Faith Week in Year 3

It has been Into Faith Week across St. Clement’s with every class focusing their learning on a specific faith or religion. Year 3 have been learning all about Hinduism.

Before writing non- chronological reports, Year 3 had to read and research the necessary information and create their own plan with sub headings.

On Thursday morning Year 3 welcomed their parents to support their learning in an art lesson. After finding out more about the Hinduism creation story,  children worked to create their own images based on the animation.

Jigsaw – Year 3

Celebrating my web of relationships
Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
We sang the jigsaw song ‘Learning together’ and I asked the children while they were singing to think about the people that are special to them.
I showed the children the set of relationship circles with different headings in each circle. I put myself in the middle of the circle and explained that they are going to write some of the people with whom they have relationships in the circles, according to how close they are to these people and how important they are to them. Those they are close to will be near the middle and those they are not so close to will be towards the other circles.

Tales of Fear

During week 5 of this half term,  Year 3 have been busy working to write their own Tales of Fear. Ideas have been readily flowing with fears ranging from spiders to crabs to bears. After planning, Year 3 orally shared their story with a friend who offered support by making sure the story followed the five parts of a tale of fear.

  1. Opening paragraph – the main character is afraid of something and is worried about it.
  2. Build up paragraph – the main character starts to do something
  3. Problem paragraph – What the main character fears actually comes true!
  4. Resolution paragraph – the main character overcomes the fear
  5. Ending paragraph – the main character has conquered the fear and looks to the future

After writing, Year 3 spent time making their changes to punctuation, grammar and also spelling. Then it was time to think like an author by publishing their stories.

Pop into Year 3 and have a read 🙂

Relationships- being a global citizen
Shared a PowerPoint of children around the world. Introduced he idea that many children around the world are are deprived not only of the ‘wants’ that the children in classes probably enjoy, but also of many of the ‘needs’.
Encouraged children to consider both the similarities and differences between their own lives and those of children living in the environment shown in the posters.
Asked children to consider if there is anything we can learn from children living in different circumstances to ourselves.

Pizza Express Visit

Dear Parents and Carers,

On Tuesday 8th of May, Yr 3 went on a special trip to the city centre.Because we are learning about Scrumdiddlyumptious in our topic lessons, Yr 3 went to Pizza Express.

At the beginning of our journey,  we went outside of the school and all we could feel was the blazing, burning sun shining. We could hear bustling cars zipping by and the wind gently blowing. Because of the sunny weather, we didn’t have to bring boiling coats. We crossed the road and headed to the  train station.

After about 2 minutes or so, we were finally in the Bullring. We walked a little to Pizza Express. After the staff introduced us, we learnt how to make pizza. First, we had some flour and had some dough. We used two fingers to smush it around the sides. Next, we flipped the dough and flattened it down. Then, we put it in a greased pan. When the dough was in the pan, we had to spread out the tomato sauce and added the cheese. Finally, the staff put the eye-catching pizzas in the oven,

When we came back to school, we ate out tasty pizzas. We really hope you will try this restaurant.

Hinduism and Poetry in Y3

This half term our focus in Religious Education lessons is on Hinduism. Year 3’s big question  is How can Brahman be everywhere and in everything?

This week Year 3 were privileged enough to receive a visit from Manisha, a practising Hindu. She shared a story abut how Ganesh got his elephant head and answered lots of questions about the religion in greater detail.

Year 3 then selected information from a range of sources to create a plan for their acrostic poems about Ganesh. By working collaboratively, Year 3 were able to discuss and improve their lines of poetry.

After completion of their poems, each pair spent time with their peers to assess each others work and offer suggestions for improvements.  Then after rehearsing, each pair presented their poem to the rest of the class.
