Jigsaw – Year 2

Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
We sang the song : changing as I grow.
We looked at the PowerPoint pictures of a baby, toddler, teenager, adult to elderly person. In talking partners children had to describe two changes they can visibly see happen to an  elderly person. We all shared ideas. Drawed out from the children how our bodies might change and asked them to think about what other changes might happen, e.g bodies become slower, old people run less but might get wiser and kinder.
Made a point that change is a natural process as we get older and we have no control over it.

Bean Diary

This week in Year 2, we have been discussing what we think plants and flowers need to survive. We decided that plants need water, sunlight, food and soil. To test this we have started an experiment where we will watch bean seeds grow over time.

To test whether they need sunlight, some have been placed in the sunlight and some have been placed in the dark. We predict that the ones in the sunlight will grow much better than the one in the dark. In addition, we have also planted them in cotton wool to test whether a seed really needs soil to germinate. Year 2 will be checking up on the bean’s progress weekly.

Jigsaw – Year 2

Last Thursday in Year 2 we started the session by sitting in a circle on chairs. We then called our minds so that we were ready to learn.

We then showed a BBC clip of an introduction to life cycles. This included images of eggs, bees, seedlings growing, eggs hatching etc. We then discussed what life cycles are and how things grow and change from a baby to an adult.

Growing in Year 2!

Welcome back to Year 2!

This is a very important term for Year 2, with SATs swiftly approaching, and they have all come back to school with their learning heads on. Well done we!

We have begun learning about our new topic of plants. Not only have we been finding out about plants, how they grow and what we use them for, but we have also been finding out how to plant seeds and care for them.

We planted some sunflowers and found out they could be yellow, dark red or orange. We also learned that the tallest sunflower ever grown was over 9m tall! WOW!

Here are some pictures of Year 2’s new gardeners.

Also if someone is rude to you on a chat during a game you must tell an adult and report the user. I also know to not share personal information online.”

Going in the right direction.

This week we have been learning about directions and patterns. We have learned that patterns have rules. Some patterns have easy rules and some patterns have hard rules. In direction we have learned that anti-clockwise is left and clockwise is right. We know how to do a half turn, quarter turn, three quarter turn and a whole turn.

Sometimes we use north, east, south and west to help us with our turns. You can have 2 or 3 of the same pattern of shape but you can change the colour of the shape. For a example you need 5 different things in one pattern. For a example you could have blue, pink, purple orange and it repeats one more time. Did you know that there is a right angle and they are a quarter turn clockwise and anti-clockwise. From Ellis and Ismael in Year 2.

Jigsaw – Year 2

To stay with, all the children and adults sat in a circle and went through the Calm Me script to prepare ourselves for learning.

We then played the ‘Moving Machines’ game. This game showed the importance of every member of the group and their contribution even though everyone’s role is different.

Finally the children were shown scenario cards and were asked to act out each scenario. Once all the children had acted out their scenario, they were asked why they thought bullying was believing in each of the scenarios?

Happy Mother’s Day!

KS1 have been thinking about their lovely mums and all of the amazing things that they do for us. To celebrate them this week, we had an assembly where we told our mums how much we loved them.

Year 2 sang some songs while their fantastic mums treated themselves to some tea and cake. Then we recited a special poem all about how much they mean to us.

The children were so enthusiastic and all of the mums seemed to really enjoy yourself. Make sure you take the time out to tell your mums or loved ones how much they mean to you!

Year 2 trip to the sea life.

This week Year 2 went to the sea life centre to learn more about animals that live under the sea. We got to see many different creatures in their natural habitats and learn lots of interesting facts about them.

For example, did you know that a sea horse can change colour to adapt to it’s surroundings and hide from predators?

Did you know that an octopus has three hearts and it’s blood is blue?

Year 2 had a wonderful time and despite having to walk in the freezing conditions, they were very well behaved and the experience was fantastic.

Jigsaw – Year 2

We started today’s jigsaw lesson with the Calm Me exercise to prepare ourselves to learn.

Then we sat in a circle and played a game called ‘Switch’. A statement was read out which applied to more than one child in the circle. Those children then switched places with each other allowing them to see what they have in common with each other.

During the Open My Mind section, we showed pictures of children’s duvet covers. We then labelled second of the classroom as Boys, Girls and Both. The children had to move the label they think the duvet belongs to.
