The children have had a hard working last week of term with lots more exciting learning. In English we created our own dragons and had a think about what magical powers they could have. We did some writing about our dragons using adjectives to describe our dragons.
In Maths we have been learning how to subtract (takeaway). We have solved practical problems and recorded our work suberly in a range of ways.
Thank you for all your support over the last half term. Thank you children for all your hard work and super progress with your learning!
Year 1 have had a wonderful exploring measuring weight! Betty the Baker needed help to learn all the skills a baker needs. So, we helped her by learning lots about measuring. We learnt all of the mathematical language and measured weight using lots of different resources. We have ended our week with our maths workshop for the parents to see and join in all the fun learning we have been doing this week.
This week we have been learning about non-fiction books. We have learnt to look out for features such as; a contents page, labels, captions, an index page and a glossary. We looked through lots of books to see if we could find the non-fiction books using a checklist of features. We sorted fiction and non-fiction books so well!
We have made our own pages of a non fiction book about ‘My Amazing Body’. We labelled a leg and a whole skeleton! Then we wrote captions about parts of our body and our organs. We even thought about the job each organ can do. Well done Year One for such enthusiastic learning this week!
The children have voted and this years Pupil Council and UNICEF representatives have been chosen.
Together they will be called ‘Children Champions’ and will carry out a range of tasks. Firstly, they will be looking at changing the academy’s house point system and designing and calculating cost for a KS2 outdoor classroom. Whilst carrying out these jobs the Champions will also be collecting pupil voice and making sure the views of the students of St. Clements Academy are heard.
Article 12: Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously. This right applies at all times, for example during immigration proceedings, housing decisions or the child’s day-to-day home life.
Year 1 had some special visitors in the classroom today! Police officers from Nechells Police station came to talk to the children about their important job they do in the community. Louise and Rob also showed the children the special clothes and gear they have to wear, and the children even had a chance to try it on too!
In Year One we have been learning the language of greater than and less than. We have been counting amounts and labelling them with less or more. We have been learning the symbols that represent greater than and less than and also been discussing what the equals sign actually means. We sang the song ‘The equal sign is a balance’ which has really helped the children to understand this concept. We also used balance scales to show this. Ask your child to sing you the song at home!
In Year 1 we have been learning the story ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson. We have been learning to re-tell the story off by heart using actions and role play. We have enjoyed making puppets, creating story maps and using our phonics knowledge to label and write sentences about Zog.
In RE, Year 1 have been exploring ‘patience’ – one of the Fruits of the Spirit. We thought about what patiences means to us. We know we have to be patience and wait for a lot of things such as lining up, sharing toys and taking in turns in speak.
We have been practising being patience and looked at different times we have to be patience. We thought about things we are looking forward to doing in Year 1, and how it cannot happen straight away. We know that we have to work hard and wait nicely for great things to happen!
‘I am looking forward to getting a number wizard award.’ Yusaf

‘I am looking forward to making lots of things in the creative area.’ Eesa
Year 1 have settled into their classroom and routines amazingly! They have really enjoyed their first week getting to know their new teachers and exploring their new classroom environment. The children were great at thinking about ideas for our class rules and how to keep safe in school. We have had lots of fun and we are looking forward to what the year brings.
This week in Year 1, we had a fantastic opportunity to explore the forest area with Mrs Grant. The children created bird’s nest for all the little birdies that visit our forest school area. It was especially challenging as we had to use tweezer to create our bird’s nests. We used all the natural materials we could find.
Take a look at our creations!
