This term, in PSHE, Year 1 are learning about ‘Living In The Wider World. For their first session we looked at what it means to be a good listener and why it is important to listen to others. The children played the game ‘Simon Said’, although they found this hard at the beginning they were soon able to listen to the instructions and have great fun at the same time.
To listen, show respect and value the voice of others.
Article 12: Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously.
During the lesson we were visited by the school nurse, who discussed ‘Oral Hygiene’ with the children. The children met Lilly the dragon and were able to tell her what she would need to brush her very large teeth, how often she should clean them and get them checked and why it is important to keep her teeth clean and healthy.
This week we held our first ‘Learning Through Stories’ session. The course runs for five weeks and is delivered by Megan Sour. The first half of the session parents learnt techniques in how to engage their children in stories. For the second half, parents were joined by their children and put to test the new skills they had learnt. The first book to excite the children was ‘Handa’s Surprise’. The children made their own books and enjoyed some yummy fruit.
This half term in Year 1, we will be exploring an author called Julia Donaldson. She has written amazing stories such as ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room on the Broom’. The first focus book we have chosen is the story called ‘Zog’. We have enjoyed learning to recite the story off by heart using actions.
In this week’s 6’s and 7’s session we talked about each of us being a special, growing person with personal strengths on which to build. We looked at how we are alike and also learnt that each of us is unique.
Children drew pictures of themselves doing something they are good at. These activities helped the children to get to know each other and become comfortable working together as a group.

Year 1 have settled into their classroom and routine fantasically! The children have enjoyed exploring their new classroom and getting stuck into their learning.
Take a look at all the fun things we have been doing.
In Year 1 this week we did circle time on transitioning. We discussed if children had any worries or concerns about going into their new class in September.
Year 1 found a magical, tiny door in our classrom. We thought about how the door got there and the children decided as a class that a little fairy had left it there for us. We decided to make fairy gardens for the fairies. We have had a busy week designing and creating our very own fairy gardens. Reception and Year 1 joined together to design and make them. We worked really well together!
Year 1 had to explain in their groups what they get angry about and had to write their answers on a white board. We all then discussed as a whole class. Children then had to write down ways to stop themselves from Getting angry. We discussed different strategies.
Year 1 have had an amazing day at Wyndley Race Track! We enjoyed taking part in the different events. We especially enjoyed the egg and spoon race. Luckily it was a dry day and the sun even decided to show its face!
Today in PHSE children had to think about a time when they were in a bad mood and then as a whole class we discussed it. Children had to write words that describe how they feel when they’re in a bad mood.
We then discussed what their family or friends have done to make them feel better.
Children had to write down sentences about how their bad moods affect their friends and family.
