Calm me

At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.

Circle time We all sang the Jigsaw song: ‘changing as I grow’.  We used Jigsaw jack as the talking object to share any thoughts the children have about the words of the song, focused on how we might change. Reinforced the idea that we all change and that is okay.

We all sat in a circle and sang the Jigsaw song: changing as I grow. Showed PowerPoint pictures of a baby, toddler, teenager, adult and elderly person. In talking partners, asked children to describe two changes they can visibly see that happened to an elderly person. Shared ideas. Discussed with children how our bodies might change and asked them to think about what other changes might happen, e.g. bodies become slower, old people run less but might get wiser and kinder. Magen the point that change is a natural process as we get older and we have no control over it.

Read the book ‘my grandpa is amazing’ and discussed what happened in the story.

I showed the children a picture of myself as a child with my parents and asked the children to pick out any physical characteristics I may have been given by one of my parents, e.g. blue eyes, brown hair. I described one of my parents and shared with the children some of the characteristics I have recieived from them, e.g. love of animals, patience, etc

Showed the children PowerPoint slides of baby pictures only. Asked the children to share their thoughts about the pictures and using Jigsaw Jino as the talking object, shared their feelings about the pictures.

Then showed a couple of slides on the PowerPoint of a mother and baby. Shared the reading book ‘my new baby’

We discussed and asked children to think about how it feels/might feel to have

Newborn baby and how the baby needs to be looked after.

Children watched a PowerPoint slide of an inflatable bungee run , in talking partners, children had to suggest ways in which the bungee run is a symbol of them starting secondary school. Children discussed what they are looking forward to but maybe held back by some fears or concerns like the bungee cord around their waist.

In today’s session we discussed personal hygiene and how our bodies are changing. We discussed how we should keep ourselves clean at all times.

Relationship web

In talking partners children had to think about people who are special to them in their family or heir friends.

Then I asked the children in pairs to come up with as many words as they can to describe family relationships and friends : e.g son, daughter, Mum, Dad, cousin, friend, mate, etc.

I explained that we all have relationships and are all connected to someone either through family or friendship. Then using Jigsaw Jaz to pass around the circle invited the children to complete the sentence stem: ‘ Belonging to a relationship makes me feel…’

At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.

We sang the jigsaw song ‘Learning together’ and I asked the children while they were singing to think about the people that are special to them.

I showed the children the set of relationship circles with different headings in each circle. I put myself in the middle of the circle and explained that they are going to write some of the people with whom they have relationships in the circles, according to how close they are to these people and how important they are to them. Those they are close to will be near the middle and those they are not so close to will be towards the other circles.

Being safe with technology

Keeping myself safe online quiz.

Children completed the quiz by calling out the questions and asking the children to work in pairs to record their answers. Once they completed, I allowed the children in pairs to join with other pairs to compare answers. Gave the children correct answers.

Used this as a recap to ensure the children really do have the right messages about how to keep themselves safe online.

At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.

Gave each child a copy of the ‘personal record sheet’ form and allowed them to fill in as much email as they can about themselves. Then I told the children that I am going to collect them all in and scan and photocopy them. Then, as pard if the drive awareness of the school and it’s children, I will put them on the school website and distribute copies to every house in the neighborhood. I asked you he children if they were happy with that? What concerns would they have? Listed reasons for concern on the board.

Then I pointed out two asterisks and the words ‘required field’ in small print. Did anyone notice this? What does it mean? How much information did you actually have to give to complete the form as required?

I collected the sheets in and assured the children that I will shred them and they will not be seen by anyone.

I explained to the children that personal information they put on the internet is available for anyone and everyone to see. As with the form they have just completed, we need to think carefully about what information we want to share with other people.
