With their flags waving high and wearing green, white and gold, the children attended St Clement’s Nursing Hospice on 17.3.17. They sang a range of Irish classics for the residents, who joined in and clapped along. The children then spent the afternoon playing party games and enjoying refreshments with residents and other members of the community.

“I love visiting and performing at the nursing home. It’s fun and I like to learn all about history from the people who live there.”

Lyla Critchley Year 4

The day was enjoyed by all!

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

Keep an eye out for more community activities from children at St Clement’s.

The residents enjoyed listening to and looking at the children’s work and sharing their own facts and traditions on this welsh patriotic day. The children gave Daffodils to the residents and staff and Tyler shared his fabulous knowledge of welsh culture and history, which was enjoyed by all.

Keep a look out for more St Clement’s in the community work.

St Clement’s in the Community

This week, children from across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 attended St Clement’s Nursing Hospice. The children shared their favourite books, class work and hobbies with the residents.

Working together with St Clement’s Home helps the children to develop their confidence in talking to others, bridges the age gap within the community and gives the children a greater understanding of value, respect and care.

The children were a credit to the Academy and engaged wonderfully with the residents in conversation. On our next visit we will be taking part in the St David’s Day celebrations, so look out for our next post.

James Memorial Homes

jmhomes

The children’s weekly visit to James Memorial Homes is a time they all look forward to. Serving refreshments for the residents and local elderly people is great for bridging age gaps in the community. This week, the children met a range of fun loving and interesting characters. A lady who has seven hedgehogs, a 70 Year old woman, who is called the ‘Dancing Queen’ by her friends, as she loves to dance and not forgetting Violet who is an amazing 91 Years old! She was able to share with the children the joys of having a tin bath in-front of the fire and how being scared of spiders was not good when your toilet was outside.

Community Work

As part of the children’s work in the community they attended James Memorial Homes to chat with the residents and serve refreshments. The children were able to talk with elderly people from the community and share their similarities and experiences. Dave, a local man,  spoke with the children about his weekly routine. The children were able to tell Dave all about their day at school and can’t wait to return next week.

Roy Slim visit

On Friday 25th November, Roy Slim, who was a pupil at St Clement’s CofE Academy many years ago, joined us for a fun filled day.

He spent time with Year 1 and 2 discussing the history of the local area, which will help them in their topic this term.

Roy also enjoyed time with Year 5 discussing life in the RAF and memories from WW2.

School Council and UNICEF

During Anti Bullying week, the School Council and UNICEF committee met to discuss and edit the school’s Anti Bullying Policy.

The children worked together to identify parts of the policy that were important, how to make sure ALL children know what the policy says and how best to share the policy with others.

The children came up with two ideas.

  1. Have a ‘Buddy Bench Stop’ outside, so children have a place to go if they are unhappy, or feel they have nobody to play with/talk to.
  2. Have parts of the policy and some UNICEF Children’s Rights on signs around the playground, so children and adults are reminded of them constantly.

Article 31: Every child has the right to relax, play and take part in a wide range of cultural and artistic activities.

Article 29: Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.

Article 3: The best interests of the child must be a top priority in all things that affect children.

Article 12: Every child has the right to have a say in all matters affecting them, and to have their views taken seriously.

Article 14: Every child has the right to think and believe what they want and to practise their religion, as long as they are not stopping other people from enjoying their rights. Governments must respect the rights of parents to give their children information about this right.

Article 15: Every child has the right to meet with other children and to join groups and organisations, as long as this does not stop other people from enjoying their rights.
