This is our final blog for this academic year. The year has been busy and seems to have gone in a flash. Apart from our daily activities we have been on several educational visits which have linked to our topics. Performed in a brilliant Nativity, taken part in the whole school sports day, celebrated The Queen’s 90th Birthday and visited Aston Parish Church, to mention just a few highlights!
We visited Wing Yip. The staff there were so kind to us and made us feel very welcome.
We slid down the slopes in a rubber ring at Tamworth Snowdome!
We met the animals at Ash end House Children’s Farm.
We were all amazing in the Nativity.
We all did our best at sports day at Windley Leisure Centre.
This will be my last day at at St Clement’s as I am taking early retirement. I would like to say a very sad goodbye to all the wonderful staff, parents and lovely children . It has been a joy to work in this amazing little school with a great big heart. I will miss you all but wish every single one of you all the very best for the future. Love from Mrs Shakespeare xxx
This week it has been Creative Week in school. In Nursery we have been finding out about Rio in Brazil . We have looked at photographs of Sugar Loaf Mountain and Copacabana beach. We have been making costumes and props for our carnival on Friday.
Sponging our tabard costumes.
Our Sugar Loaf Mountain Costume.
We looked at the costumes that people wear to the world famous Rio Carnival. We have made hats and tabards in the colours of the Brazilian Flag.
We have made shakers to make the sound of the drums at the carnival. We used empty bottles and put in beads to make the sounds. More beads make a different sound to using just a few.
We have also discovered that the Olympic games are being held in Rio this summer and made a special flag for the parade.
This week our focus story book is Pirates Love Underpants.
We have drawn pictures of pirates and written about them. On Thursday we welcomed the lovely families whose children will be starting in Nursery in the new academic year.It was great to see you all. Have a lovely summer and we look forward to seeing you in September.
We have been exploring how the same amount of liquid looks different in a range of containers. We have counted how many small bottles can fill larger ones. It has been very splashy but great fun!
We have been competing our Ocean drums with
some lovely tissue paper collage.
We have also been working hard on our counting skills and practising to write our numbers beautifully!
This week the seaside arrived in Nursery. We now have a fantastic sandy bay and beach cafe role play. Our work linked to this weeks story The lighthouse keeper’s lunch. We have looked at packed lunches and discussed healthy options; the food that is good for us. We looked at things that we should eat occasionally as treats. We have made our own picnic baskets and made healthy choices and allowed ourselves one treat because picnics are special and a treat in its self.
We have also been making our own ocean drums to bring the sound of the sea into Nursery too!
We have continued to explore how colours can be changed. Linking our work to the story The Blue Balloon by Mick Inkpen.
Using balloons to paint, we have looked at light and dark shades mixing black and white to blue again watching as the shades mix. We are becoming colour experts.
We have also been looking at repeated patterns using shape and colour to make then continue a pattern.
On Monday afternoon we had a drumming session with a man called Tim . We all really enjoyed it and followed instructions really well. Mrs Shakespeare and Mrs Cooper were very proud of everyone in Nursery.
The European Cup football tournament is the theme behind our Father’s Day Cards. Happy Father’s Day everyone!
On Friday we went to Windley Leisure Centre for our sports day. We had a great time .Well done everyone! You all tried your very best. we are really proud of you.
This has been a very busy week in Nursery. We were visited by Nurse Amanda and Nurse Nicola who told us all about making sure we wash our properly. They put gel on our hands, then asked us to go and wash it off. Then we had to put our hands under a special light that showed us how clean our hands were straight after washing them. It was bad news we weren’t washing them properly but since the nurses demonstration we are now!
We have based our work around the book Whoosh around the Mulberry bush and our focus has been learning about words that rhyme. We have been doing lots of counting activities , tracing and name writing too.
We have also been looking at primary colours and finding out how colours change when they mix. We painted one hand then the other and before we rubbed them together we predicted the colour we would make.
This week in Nursery our work has centred around the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle.
We have explored length comparing and ordering caterpillars from shortest to longest. We have used words that describe length like shorter and longer.
We discussed the story and noticed how the caterpillar changed. He began as an egg on a leaf. The egg popped and out came a caterpillar. The caterpillar ate lots of food and got bigger and bigger. He went to sleep in a cocoon for two weeks. When he came out he was a beautiful butterfly. We used our cutting skills to cut out , then order pictures of the life cycle of a caterpillar. We stuck the pictures onto a paper plate and sewed around the edge.
We have also made a caterpillar number line and a large 3D life cycle for our display. We have looked at basic symmetry and made butterflies, checking that the pattern is the same on both wings.
It’s maths week! It was great to welcome parents into school to join in with our activities on Tuesday morning. Thanks to everyone who was able to come. This week we have continued to work around aspects of the story We’re going on a bear hunt . Everyone joined in with a number hunt in our outdoor area . We sequenced the sections of the story by matching and painting by numbers. We also carried out an investigation into finding out our favourite part of the book. We have done lots of counting and sorting. We ordered teddy bears from smallest to largest. In addition to this we have completed our clay pieces in the style of Barbara Hepworth., which the children have really enjoyed doing. This links into the cave and sea scape featured in the story. Barbara Hepworth was a famous artist and sculptor who was born in Wakefield in 1903 and died in St Ives in 1975.
We have now completed our We’re going on a bear hunt display. We have all made some camouflage binoculars and used real ones in our bird watching hide to spot our feathered friends in the school grounds. We have talked about how we explain where things are and have used a teddy bear to assess our understanding and use of positional language.
We have also explored the work of Barbara Hepworth who was a famous sculptor. We focused on her piece sea form and are now making our own pieces in her style, watch this space for our completed display!
