This week we have explored non-fiction texts about autumn. We learnt that we can find out information from books and computers. The children found out lots of facts about autumn as well as exploring things such as conkers, autumn leaves, pine cones, sticks and plants.
We also made our own autumn information books. Make sure you check them out on display as you come into Early Years.
On Thursday the school nurse came to visit Reception. She spoke about the importance of washing our hands and when we need to wash them. We put our hands under a special light that showed up the dirt on our hands. Then we washed them as the nurse had shown us and checked under the light whether we had done a good job.
This week Reception have been reading the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’. We have used Talk for Writing to act out and retell the story following a story map. We have made straw, stick and brick houses using different materials and resources.
This week, the children have enjoyed reading and retelling the story ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’. They have used the story language to act it out during their independent learning times and as a whoel class.
This week, Reception have continued to learn our school rules and routines. Reception have been learning all about kindness this week as we have made flowers, butterflies, leaves and lots more to go on our display. The children had some lovely ideas of ways they can be kind and have shown this in at school.
Also, this Friday we went to our first school assembly!

Our new Reception children have been in this week exploring their new environment. They have been learning about our rules and routines at school and have engaged in lots of play.

Reception have spend their last full day with our chicks as sadly they will be taken back to the farm tomorrow. We have enjoyed watching them grow and change over the two weeks. Reception have all carefully stroked and held the chicks. We have learnt all about the life cycle of a hen and it has been great to see part of it in real life.
On Wednesday, Reception visited Sarehole Mill. First we played in the park and had a picnic. We found two enormous tree which gave us some nice shade to cool us down. After lunch we went into the mill where we joined in with the story of The Little Red Hen. We examined real wheat, looked at the ‘ears’ and tried to get the flour from the grains. Using the flour we had made, we added more ingredients to make some dough. Next, we went inside the mill to see the machinery. Finally we saw the huge oven which can bake up to 100 loaves of bread. Reception had such a great time!
Nursery and Reception would like to say a big thank you to Mr Ricketts and Mr Coley for our new sand and gravel areas in our outdoor environment. The children have really enjoyed exploring these new areas. Lots of imaginative play, communication and language skills, and problem solving have been shown through the children playing and exploring.

After reading the story of ‘The Little Red Hen’ last week, Reception have worked together to make bread rolls this week. We looked at the ingredients we needed, wrote shopping lists, and read through the instructions. After they were cooked, we shared them out between us and they were delicious!
