Forest School 17-1-18

On Wednesday another new group started Forest School sessions.  In this group there are children from years 3, 4 and 5.

We started with a game to make sure we all knew each other’s names.

We then played a game of ‘one, two, three where are you?’  During the game the children were very good at following the Forest School rules.

The children were excited to use the bow saw.  The children listened carefully to the tool talk and so knew how to keep themselves safe when using it.

Year 5 maths

As part of our workon shape, we carried out a number of shape investigations.

  1. We used modelling materials to create 3d shapes and described their properties using correct athematical vocabulary.
  2. We identified the properties of 2D shapes including parallel and perpendicualr lines and right, acute and obtuse angles. We then soretd the shapes using a Venn diagram.
  3. We identified 3D shapes from their nets. We discovered that there are many different ways to draw the net of a cube.

Y3 Gods and Mortals

Welcome back to Year 3 who have returned with an amazing attitude to their learning 🙂 Our new topic is called Gods & Mortals and is all about the Ancient Greeks. As there are so many things to learn about, this topic will take us all the way up to Easter!

Next week, Year 3 will be taking a visit to the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (BMAG) to find out more about the Ancient Greeks and to take part in a series of workshops. Year 2 should have already bought home a letter explaining our visit, if not please ask for another.

Our visit will last the whole day and we will also spend time exploring the museum.

RE …has led a good life.

This week in RE we have started to look at  what characteristics show that people have led  good lives.

Mohammed thought that Martin Luther King had led a good life because of these qualities in his character:-

he fought for the rights of everyone,  fought for equality, believed that you could be anything you want. He was dedicated, strong-minded and an inspiration to others.

Hamza thought Allah had led a good life because of these qualities in his character:-

he is a kind and loving God, who cared about people and forgave people when they had made the wrong choices.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

Year 2 have settled well into the new term and are ready and eager for their new learning.

We have begun our new topic where we are learning all about Pirates.

This week we have explored what it was like to be a pirate and take part in many adventures. We decided to make our own pirate crew so we all completed a job application where we outlined our special skills and experiences for the job.

Captain Smith will be looking at all of the applications and expects to be employing a quartermaster, helmsman and mate very soon!

Arrrrrrrr!

Reception’s First Week Back!

As a class we have shared our holidays news. The children spoke about how they celebrated Christmas and what they did in the holidays. They have painted pictures of this and have also done some writing about it. We have also explored 2D shapes and have used them to create pictures.

Here are some photos of what the children have been doing this week:

Year 4 – Maths – Finding quantities of amounts

This week Year 4 have been learning about fractions and how to find a non-unit fraction of an amount. On Friday, we applied our knowledge within a problem using Smarties. We shared the Smarties in to equal groups by dividing the amount by the denominator. Then we multiplied by the numerator to find our final answer. It was great fun and we even got to eat some Smarties when we solved the answer accurately!

Telling the time in Year 1

This week in Maths, Year 1 have been learning all about the time. We have been learning to read the time by creating and  drawing the hands on a clock – o’clock and half past. We know that the long hand is the minute hand and the short hand is the hour hand. We enjoyed making our very own watches and clocks, we even made a huge one in our outside classroom!
