Book week in Nursery

Nursery have really enjoyed reading Keep out! Bears About!

keep out

We were very excited to meet the author, Sally Grindley in a special Book Day assembly on Thursday.

Also on Thursday we were able to dress up as our favourite characters.  There were lots of super heros in Nursery that day!

To finish book week Year 5 came to share a story with us.   The Nursery children chose a story and the Year 5 children read it to them.

We then finished off with the Nursery children telling Year 5 one of our favourite stories We’re going on a bear hunt.  It was really lovely to hear the Year 5 children joining in too.

During Science week, Year 6 were investigating which ingredients made a difference to the size, shape and texture of a bread roll.

Children had to use their mathematical skills to accurately weigh and read scales in order to make this a fair test.

The children carried out their fair test and changed only one variable (Ingredient). They recorded their findings as a comic strip and were able  to note that in order for bread to rise it needed  a raising agent, Yeast.

Reception’s book share with Year 5

Today as part of Book Week, Reception had the opportunity to share their favourite books with some children from Year 5. The children really enjoyed talking about their books and listening to Year 5 read to them. We were very lucky to have Mrs Hall read a story to all of us. Reception then shared the Sally Grindley book ‘Shh!’ that we had been looking at this week to year 5.

Book Week in Year 1

Year 1 have really enjoyed Book Week! We have taken part in many different activities and read lots of new stories. We have really enjoyed looking and completing work on the story ‘Help!’ by Sally Grindley. We were very excited to actually meet her and ask her some super questions. Our favourite part of the week was celebrating World Book day in our fantastic outfits!

Can you see what we have dressed as?

A Scrumdiddlyumptious Start

Wow! What a great start to this half term, Year 3’s new topic is called ‘Scrumdiddlyumptious’. This topic will have lots of exciting learning opportunities with food as the main focus.

Monday morning started with baking flapjacks in our Maths lesson. We discovered how important it is to be able to read a scale accurately when measuring out our ingredients.

Then on Wednesday, we travelled to Pizza Express where they had an opportunity to make their own pizzas! Every child had the chance to experience how to flatten the dough for their pizzas, before adding the other ingredients.

Year 3 all had the pleasure of taking home their pizzas to enjoy with their families. We hope you all enjoyed a taste of their handy work. Well done Year 3, the Pizza Express staff were extremely impressed with your behaviour and positive attitudes to your learning.

A huge thank you to the dads that joined us for the visit – your support was invaluable

St Clement’s in the community

This week, as part of St Clement’s in the community, the children visited St Clement’s Nursing Hospice. They presented work in celebration of St David’s Day.

The residents enjoyed listening to and looking at the children’s work and sharing their own facts and traditions on this welsh patriotic day. The children gave Daffodils to the residents and staff and Tyler shared his fabulous knowledge of welsh culture and history, which was enjoyed by all.

Keep a look out for more St Clement’s in the community work.

Arrr! Pirate Day!

There was something a bit strange happening in Year 2 last week. Instead of a class full of lovely, well behaved children, there was a room full of PIRATES!!!!

Year 2 enjoyed dressing up and acting like pirates for the day. The children had their own pirate crew for the day and tried to win points for their crew. Together they sang their own sea shanties by exploring how to make music using water and glass jars. We found out that we could make a low pitched sound if the jar was full of water and a high pitched sound it if was less full.

Later the children took part in their very own treasure hunt! They were searching for scrolls of information.  If they could answer the question on their scroll they got a gold coin that they could exchange for some treasure!

The case of the frozen hand

Science week was very mysterious in Year 4. Mrs Harris discovered a frozen hand and asked Year 4 for help.  Where had it come from? How could we return it to the Arctic without it melting?

After brainstorming ideas, we investigated the properties of materials to find which would insulate our hand and stop it from thawing. Our fair test showed which materials worked well and helped us to design an insulated delivery system for our frozen hand.

Science Week in Year 3

This has been a very exciting week which started with and assembly and also a class workshop with Jane, our Science Boffin.

We had great fun making a polymer – slime! Ask one of us what polymer actually means.

As a class we investigated the question ‘Which chocolate melts the fastest?’  First, we discussed our own ideas and made predictions.

Then we investigated and after looking at our results we posed our own What if? questions to then further investigate.

Science Week in Year 1

The Superheroes needed Year 1’s help! They wanted to find out what would happen to skittles if they were placed in hot water and in freezing cold water. The helpful Year 1’s were eagar and willing! The children made predictions and decided how they were going to conduct their experiment.

They also decided what equipment was needed and wrote a list.

They observed closely to the changes that occurred.

They found out that the skittles dissolved quicker in hot water, and slower in cold water. The children especially loved how the skittles made rainbow colours in the water!
