Year 5 had a very strange character visiting their classroom this week. We were a little scared and confused by their appearance. Their visit marked the start of our new topic, Peasants, Princes and Pestilence. Have a look at the the photo of our visitor and ask Year 5 all about their odd costume and what was happening in and around London during 1348.
On Wednesday, Year 4 visited Birmingham town hall and became detectives to investigate the case of the missing organ pipes. We travelled back to 1853, 1945 and 1963 to dance, look for clues and meet historical figures. We particularly enjoyed crawling across the floor to escape the air raid sirens during WW2. The visit ended with the pipes restored and a demonstration on the organ.
Today we performed our class assembly to the whole school and our parents. Our class assembly was based on inspirational people, so all week we have been thinking about people who inspire us and make us better people. We also thought about what we could do to make a difference, however, big or small.
This afternoon Year 6 took part in a street dance and graffiti workshop. This was a much needed break from intense weeks of practice testing and preparation for their upcoming National Tests beginning next week. The children enjoyed dancing and performed their own group routine at the end of the session, they also produced their own graffiti dance logo.
Good luck to Year 6, we are fully prepared for next week. Remember breakfast club begins 0815 Monday 8/5/17.
This week Nicola, our school nurse has been back to work with Y3. We have been working to find out more about hygiene.
Each group had to work together to discuss and list how we look after our bodies . Each group recorded reasons why it is important to wash and what would happen if we didn’t.
We discussed these parts of the body:
teeth
hair
bodies
hands
feet
When it is warm or run around we sweat. This helps our body cool down. Sweat does not smell, however when it dries on our skin the bacteria feeds on the sweat and this is what smells.
Did you know we should…
visit the dentist every 6 months
wash our hair 3 times per week
wash our face and behind our ears everyday
wash even if we use deodorant
wash our hands every time after we touch an animal, after we sneeze and after going to the toilet
We have started our ‘Splendid Skies’ topic with creating art work based around the seasons and weather. We explored the weather we have in each season and showed this in our art work. We have been exploring Spring. We wrote acrostic poems based on Spring which tells us about all the things we see, feel, smell and hear in Spring time.
On Tuesday, Y3 caught the train into the city centre to visit Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to start our new topic ‘Gods and Mortals’. This topic is based around the Ancient Greeks and Y3 will be finding out more across this half term.
At the museum we explored the Ancient Greek gallery, sketched some of the artefacts, and then worked with Sarah, the museum teacher to design an amphora pot with a geometric design. This design was then scratched onto a final piece to imitate the black figure technique. Afterwards we explored the red figure technique by painting an owl design, as a gift for Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Both techniques were used by the Ancient Greeks.
Finally, Sarah took us back to the Ancient Greek gallery to carry out a treasure hunt, where we found the Ancient Greek equivalents of everyday objects, e.g. a jug or mug. Y3 also found out more about each of the different gods and designed an offering for them.
A child with a disability has the right to live a full and decent life with dignity and independence, and to play an active part in the community. Governments must do all they can to provide support to disabled children.
Here at St. Clement’s C of E Academy, the staff encourage the students to have fun, learn and build up their self-esteem, especially by creating after school clubs such as boxing and multi-sports, used to not just have fun, but to also help the children acknowledge that people with disabilities are fully welcome at the school.
Some of the worlds best sports stars are wheelchair basketball players.
A disability should not stop any child from living a normal life and having the same rights as others.
