As a class we have shared our holidays news. The children spoke about how they celebrated Christmas and what they did in the holidays. They have painted pictures of this and have also done some writing about it. We have also explored 2D shapes and have used them to create pictures.
Here are some photos of what the children have been doing this week:
This week Year 4 have been learning about fractions and how to find a non-unit fraction of an amount. On Friday, we applied our knowledge within a problem using Smarties. We shared the Smarties in to equal groups by dividing the amount by the denominator. Then we multiplied by the numerator to find our final answer. It was great fun and we even got to eat some Smarties when we solved the answer accurately!
This week in Maths, Year 1 have been learning all about the time. We have been learning to read the time by creating and drawing the hands on a clock – o’clock and half past. We know that the long hand is the minute hand and the short hand is the hour hand. We enjoyed making our very own watches and clocks, we even made a huge one in our outside classroom!
Today a new group of children started Forest School sessions. This group of children are all in Year 4. The children made a great start, it was brilliant to see them making good use of the area.
Year 5 have had an interesting start to their new science topic- the life cycle of plants and animals. They began by sharing ideas and sorting statements to order the reproductive cycle of a flower. They then used magnifying glasses to investigate the structure of a flower in more detail and identify the female and male organs. By the end of the lesson, they had dissected a flower and were able to identify each part using their new scientific language.
We had great fun today at our Christmas party. We played lots of games, enjoyed some yummy food and watched a Christmas film.
We even had a visit from a special person – Father Christmas! He must have read the letter we sent him because he bought us the new dolls we were hoping for.
This week it was the last week of Forest School for this group of Year 5 children. We had a fire and toasted marshmallows. Everyone was very good at remembering the fire safety rules. We always walk around the fire circle. We wait until we are invited to the fire. We kneel in the respect position when at the fire.
The marshmallows tasted delicious!
In our reflection time we thought back over the last few weeks. Here are some of the children’s thoughts:
“I used to not care a lot about nature but now, because of Forest School, I care much more about wildlife”
“I liked it when we got to climb trees”
“It taught me more about nature”
“I usually don’t like bugs but now we’ve learnt about them I like them”
I would like to say a big well done to Reception for their nativity, they were fantastic! Even though they missed out on some rehearsal time, they all worked so hard and made me very proud!
Parents joined Birmingham and Solihull Women’s Aid to take part in a ladies only session. They discussed many issues effecting women, the impact of these and where to access support. Parents were able to gain information to share with others and felt confident in being able to support friends, family or loved ones who may need it.
Keep a look out for more sessions!
