We have been looking at the differences between autobiographies and biographies. As a class we decided to write our own autobiography and have produced a super display. This is outside the classroom and pictures will be posted on the first week back.
Year 6 have also made super progress in their writing this half term, this is encouraging as they are now becoming more independent and creative
Yesterday we started our jigsaw lesson with the Calm Me exercise to prepare ourselves to learn.
In small groups the children were given a blank learning charter template and asked to teach a consensus on what should be on it. They filed in the rights, responsibilities, rewards, and consequences that would be most meaningful to them.
The children then returned to the circle and shared their ideas. The teacher then enabled the class to come up with one learning charter and they competed a template for this. This template will then be passed onto the school council as our class contribution towards the new learning charter.
Year 6 are busy using skills in reading to help them on their way to achieving success in the forthcoming SATs. The children are becoming more competent in recognising and referring to domains in their reading.
In maths too they are working hard and have found new confidence when measuring, calculating, and recognising angles.
Why don’t you ask your child to discuss their learning from this week? Can they discuss angles around a point?
A big thank-you to all the parents who attended parents night ,it was nice you could see and appreciate the improvements in your child’s work.
As part of Child Safety Week, the children learnt all about ‘Pantosaurus’ and the NSPCC campaign. Classes from Reception to Year 6 enjoyed singing along and learning how to stay safe. Links for more information regarding the campaign, ‘Lets Talk PANTS’ can be found on the school newsletter or on the NSPCC website.
During last week, Year 6 were looking at using measures in their maths. They were converting different measures and solving problems involving measures. It was key to read the problem, convert to same measures, and use known strategies to solve the calculations. Remembering to revert to the original measure.
At the start of the session everyone including the adults, participated in the ‘Calm Me’ exercise. It was explained to the children that this was to help get their minds ready to learn.
The children were then shown ‘The Jigsaw Charter’ to help reinforce how they work together as a team.
The children played a game called ‘Off to Market’. The tracker started a song saying: “Jigsaw Jem went to market and bought……” Teacher filled in the blank with bananas, then the next child on the left had to sing the same song remembering what was bought and then adding another item. Each child would have to try and remember all the items and add their own to the list.
The ‘Open my mind’ exercise involved the children to write a list of what they would get if they won the lottery. They would then have to cross out all the things that they don’t ‘need’ and then review the list is see what’s left.
Finally the children looked at Maslow’s triangle and tried to understand his theory of the hierarchy of human need.
In yesterdays session we started off by sharing the ‘jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
We then played a ‘Blast Off’ game with the whole class. The game encouraged the class to work as a group and listen to each other. The better they worked as a team the more enjoyable the game became.
After the game was completed we worked through a ‘Calm Me’ activity. This helped the children to calm down so that they were ready to learn.
Next the children spent time looking at a PowerPoint that had pictures of British scenes. They then had to tell each other what thoughts came into their minds after looking at the picture.
We have started a new scheme throughout the school which is called Jigsaw and will be following a new structure for PHSE lessons.
This week with year 3,4,5 and 6 I put up a PowerPoint example of a learning charter and explained about our rights and responsibilities which create a learning environment, in which everyone can learn well. I explained when people take their responsibilities seriously, they can gain rewards. When they do not, there are consequences.
Children in groups created their own learning charter.
With Year 1 and 2 we did the ‘Calm Me’ time which develops mindfulness using breathing techniques, awareness exercises and visualisation. We then did circle time and introduced a new Jigsaw ‘Friend’ and mentioned that he/she will be part of their class and they will have to look after it.
We discussed the reason as to why the ‘Friend’ could be nervous and the children gave their own explanations.
