This week Year 5 had their class assembly. our theme for the assembly was charity. During the assembly the pupils discussed what charities do and the meaning of charity. Some children were also involved in the acting out of the parable of “The Good Samaritan.”  All of the children spoke clearly and the acting was also of a high standard. Well done Year 5!

Last week was maths week across the school. It was a highly enjoyable week and in year 5 we concentrated on volume and money. Our activities included making cubes and cuboids to specific dimensions and creating money boxes to sell for Christian Aid. See our pictures below.

On Tuesday 3^rd of May, Year 5 went on a trip to the Butterfly Farm in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The trip was a chance to learn more about the life cycle and habitats of Butterflies and other insects, which ties in with our current topic of minibeasts.

During our trip we were given an educational tour of the Butterfly Farm, which greatly increased our knowledge on the species, along with having the opportunity to explore the farm independently. Children also had the chance to hold and touch butterflies, with some of the group looking like they might be the next David Attenborough.

All the children enjoyed the trip and we are now looking forward to continuing our learning in our topic lessons.

This week Year 5 spent our science lessons worm charming and creating several class wormeries.

At the start of Wednesday morning the class headed outside to have a go at worm charming. For those of you who don’t know what worm charming is, it is the use of a range of techniques to attract worms out of the ground. We tried several techniques including making different sounds on the ground (the vibrations apparently make the worms head to the surface) and pouring soapy water on the ground (the soap is meant to irritate the worms skin and bring them up).

Having collected our worms we had to now build somewhere for them to live. Each table had collected enough worms to build a wormery each, so as a class we built 5 wormeries.  To create our wormeries we had to put 3 different layers of soil type into old sweet jars and a fish-tank, before adding some carrot peels and potato skins for food.

We will continue to care for and check on our worms each week, as we learn more about habitats and life cycles.

On Thursday, the whole school celebrated the Queen’s 90^th birthday. In the morning, Year 5 undertook a number of activities relating to Great Britain and celebration.

We started the day looking at British Values and focused on democracy. The class were split into five groups and they had to imagine they were stranded on a desert island.  Each group had to elect a leader before and create a manifesto. The groups then presented their manifesto before the class had an election and voted for the party they wanted to lead the desert island.

We then spent the rest of the morning practising our circus skills, designing a stamp to commemorate the Queen’s birthday and making sandwiches for the afternoon street party. All the children were brilliant at the circus skills and I’m sure we might see a few of them on Britain’s Got Talent in the future.

In the afternoon we moved outside for the street party to celebrate the Queen’s birthday. The children each had a plate of food, including the sandwiches they made, and then had a chance to wave their Great British flags and dance to some music from the reign of Queen Elizabeth II.

All in all it was great day enjoyed by all.
