On Tuesday, year 4 had a workshop with firefighters from Aston fire station. We found out a little more about their important job, played games to identify fire hazards in the home and learnt how to keep safe in the event of a fire. Maryam and Samir even dressed up as firefighters and found out just how heavy the uniform is!
In science we are investigating habitats and food chains. A habitat is a natural environment where plants and animals live. It provides water, food and shelter for the living thing it supports.
We discussed habitats around the world and then investigated the micro-habitats in the school grounds.
We used pooters, magnifying glasses and identification sheets to discover the plants and animals all around us.
In our literacy unit, balanced arguments, we are debating the issue of zoos and deciding whether they are cruel or a valuable way to conserve endangered animals. To help make this decision, we visited Dudley Zoo to study the type of enclosures they use and find out about their work in conservation.
We were able to make observations about the treatment of animals as well as find out more about endangered animals around the world and their natural habitats.
Luckily, the weather was sunny and, apart from a few tired feet, everyone had a great day. Highlights included feeding nectar to the lorikeets, listening to howler monkeys and watching the endangered Humboldt penguins being fed.
Friday 19th May Years 1 to 6 went to the Community Sports HUB to take part in sporting activities such as cricket, rounder’s, football, tennis and boxing. Everyone took part in each activity for 45 minutes. Despite the damp weather lots of fun was had by all. It was great to see all the children showing off what they had learnt in their PE lessons. The teachers have said that it was a fantastic day and great to see the children demonstrating their skill set out side of the classroom. This was great for the children’s physical development and we look forward to having more days like this next year.
Samir Y4 “My favourite sport was the tennis because we had lots of space to play which we don’t normally get in school.”
Tavani Y4 “My Favourite sport was cricket because we don’t normally play big games and I won a medal.”
Amira Y3 “I liked the football because it was really good playing on a proper grass pitch”
Reuben Y5 “Boxing was my favourite because the gym was really nice and I enjoyed using the bags.”
In Year 4 we discussed ‘Changes’. We talked about what changes are and I asked children to think about any changes they have experienced and the feelings they had. The children then had to write a list of changes they have had and indicated if they were positive or negative.
Year 5 – Feelings
This afternoon in Year 5 we discussed ‘Feelings’ and if anyone had ever had a pet that had died and how they felt about it – together the children discussed their stories and then shared as a whole class. To help the children understand the feelings they can experience we read the story ‘when someone goes away’, then the children complete the pages on feelings from their journals.
Year 4 had a problem to solve in science this week. How could we make the light bulb light up? With only a battery, a bulb and two wires, we had to investigate how to make light. We discovered that it was important how we connected the battery and that the wires had to make a complete circuit. Next week, we are going to take this investigation further. Is there anything else we could use instead of a battery to make the bulb light up?
We started our PHSE lesson with circle time this afternoon. Together we discussed fear and the effects it has on their own and other people’s behaviour.
Next we read the story ‘being alone’ and I asked the children varying questions. We had a lot of discussion time and children worked well.
Year 5 – Influence
In today’s lesson we discussed what is meant by the word ‘influence’ and the children looked at who and what influences them i.e. parents, adverts, friends.
After class discussions the children had to write a definition of the word influence and about some of the things that influence them.
On Wednesday, Year 4 visited Birmingham town hall and became detectives to investigate the case of the missing organ pipes. We travelled back to 1853, 1945 and 1963 to dance, look for clues and meet historical figures. We particularly enjoyed crawling across the floor to escape the air raid sirens during WW2. The visit ended with the pipes restored and a demonstration on the organ.
