Jigsaw – Year 3

Shared ‘The  jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Today in jigsaw lesson children had male/female/both  cards and a set of ‘whose responsibility?’ Cards. We asked the children to read each statement, children decided if it is a job mainly for men women or both and places it beneath the coresponding sign. Children also wrote extra ideas of their own.
Children then had to draw each member of their family and identity two jobs that each person, including themselves does.

Charcoal Sketches in Y3

This week Year 3 have been developing their knowledge of great artists by exploring the still life work of Wilhelm Kalf, Georges Braque and Pieter Claesz .

With each still life image, Year 3 used a range of questions to structure their discussions.

  • Why do you think the artist made it?
  • What can you see in the picture?
  • Which colours are used?
  • When do you think it was made?
  • How does the image make you feel?

With a final question of which image would you choose to have at home and why?

Year 3 then worked with charcoal in their sketch books to create still life sketches of peppers.

Have a look at some of the end results.

The start of the Summer term in Year 3

What an exciting start to the new term! Year 3 spent a day this week at Woodlands Adventure activity centre. Everyone had the opportunity to take part in archery, canoeing, zip wire and the assault course.

Year 3 demonstrated perseverance, resilience, collaboration whilst overcoming their fears, especially at the top of the zip wire tower The children were fantastic ambassadors for the Academy and can not wait to return.

‘I really enjoyed the assault course even though I did the splits on the net!’ Kaif

‘I really enjoyed it but it was a bit scary at the top of the zip wire,’ Carly

‘When I was on the zipline I could see everything at the adventure centre.’ Abdullah

‘I enjoyed archery because I felt like Robin Hood!’ Essam

‘When I saw how high the zipline tower was, I was scared. But after I just wanted to do it again,’ Aleesha

Jigsaw – Year 3

Yesterday the children began by paying a game in pairs. Each child had a card with a baby on it. 2 cards shared the same image. The children were asked to find their pair and sit with them. They were then asked to think about one thing that could happen to their baby while they turned into an adult.

In open my mind, the children were shown pictures of babies. The children were asked to their feelings about the pictures. They were then shown a couple of slides of mother and baby. The children were told that usually mothers look after the baby while it’s young, but often the males can also have an important role to play.

Tangrams in Year 3

After learning more about 2D shapes, Year 3 put their knowledge to solving shape puzzles in the form of Tangrams. Tangrams are ancient Chinese puzzles where you create pictures from a set of 2D shapes.

The first challenge after naming all of the different shapes and their properties was to rebuild the square, it was a lot harder than you think!

The next challenge was to create an animal from the same pieces.

Can you recognise what Year 3 created?

International Week in Y3

Throughout International Week 2018, Year 3 have travelled across four of the seven continents. Each day the focus has been on a different continent and the children have carried out their own research to find out more about Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. This research has then informed recount writing in the style of a travel diary.

Year 3 have also shared artefacts from their own cultures and heritage. The children were very knowledgeable and were able to confidently present and explain what they had bought in.

Year 3’s art focus was on the Zimbabwean artist and illustrator Phillipa-Alyce Browne.  After sketching an animal,  Year 3 used a range of media to add bright, vibrant colours and traditional African patterns to their sketches.

Jigsaw – Year 3

Yesterday in Year 3 all the children and adults sat in a circle and went through the Calm Me script to prepare ourselves for learning.

In Connect us, the children played ‘Switch’. Statements were read out and children had to switch places if they agreed with any of them or had experienced anything similar.

In Tell me or show me, the children were shown a clip about bullying. They were asked what they would do if they knew someone who was been bullied.
