This week the focus has been performance poetry. Year 3 have been considering what makes a good performance and offering ideas and suggestions for improvements to their own performance and also to the performances of their peers.
The week started with a poem called The School Kids’ rap which allowed Year 3 to explore the rhythm of the poem when performing. Followed by Fruit Picking by Jack Ousbey. For this poem Year 3 were challenged to compose and perform a percussion accompaniment. The end of the week Year 3 looked at a poem called No Word of a Lie by Jackie Kay.
Have a look at our videos of our rap performance of The School Kids’ Rap 🙂
As the topic of Gods & Mortals is coming to an end, this week Y3 have looked at the print called Icarus by Henry Matisse. Matisse was a French artist known for his use of colour.
Icarus was the son of Daedalus who dared to fly too close to the sun on wings of feathers and wax. Icarus and Daedalus had been imprisoned by King Minos on Crete. Icarus attempted to use the wings to escape but unfortunately failed and plunged into the sea below.
Year 3 used a collage technique to recreate their own versions of Matisse’s famous print.
Capacity has been the focus for our Maths learning this week. Y3 started off by ordering and estimating how much water each container would hold. Each team then worked collaboratively to use the measuring cylinders to find out how accurate their estimates were.
Following on from this Y3 have been able to apply their new learning to a range of problem solving activities.
In Year 3 we talked about road safety and how we keep ourselves safe when crossing the road. We started off by asking everyone how to cross a road safely? Discussed if we ever ran across a road, or crossed somewhere dangerous or have been pushed into a road by someone? Then we all shared our stories.
Friday 19th May Years 1 to 6 went to the Community Sports HUB to take part in sporting activities such as cricket, rounder’s, football, tennis and boxing. Everyone took part in each activity for 45 minutes. Despite the damp weather lots of fun was had by all. It was great to see all the children showing off what they had learnt in their PE lessons. The teachers have said that it was a fantastic day and great to see the children demonstrating their skill set out side of the classroom. This was great for the children’s physical development and we look forward to having more days like this next year.
Samir Y4 “My favourite sport was the tennis because we had lots of space to play which we don’t normally get in school.”
Tavani Y4 “My Favourite sport was cricket because we don’t normally play big games and I won a medal.”
Amira Y3 “I liked the football because it was really good playing on a proper grass pitch”
Reuben Y5 “Boxing was my favourite because the gym was really nice and I enjoyed using the bags.”
What a fantastic day! Y3 have taken part in a whole school sports event at the Sports Hub. The day started with tennis, then onto rounders and indoor games before lunch! After lunch it was cricket, boxing and football.
Medals were awarded at each activity to children demonstrating positive sporting behaviours and putting in 100% effort – even when the task was difficult.
Take a look at some of our proud medalists in Y3 🙂
This week in Year 3 the children have looked at how to keep themselves safe. Children had to look at their helping hand and were reminded who they can talk to if they are worried or concerned. To help the children remember who they could talk to they completed the relevant pages from their Dot Com journals.
Year 6 – Separation
In Year 6 we talked about how to deal with separation. We discussed what might happen if a family becomes divided, how might members of the family feel about this? We also looked at who they can talk to in this situation completing their journals as we went along.
In today’s lesson the children were given feeling cards and they had to describe how the children on the cards were feeling and why they may be feeling like that.
Afterwards we talked about how the children could keep themselves safe and together we read Dot’s story on safety. We all discussed how we should keep ourselves safe at all times and the children completed the pages from their journal to reflect this.
Year 6 – Weapons
Today in Tear 6 we talked about weapons. We explored and discussed the way weapons are portrayed in films and on TV. We spoke about how this is not a true reflection of reality.
The children completed the relevant pages in their journals on weapons and discussed what the risks of carrying a weapon are.
This week Year 3 have been busy rehearsing their class assembly. This is the final assembly following the ‘Inspirational People’ theme and Year 3 have been discovering the stories behind a group of 10 athletes who made history at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Each athlete is a refugee and has left their home country to find a place of safety. Year 3 will be telling the stories of these truly inspirational people in their assembly on Friday afternoon.
Next week it is Christian Aid Week and St. Clement’s will all be focusing their learning on refugees and trying to raise money to donate.
