Wibble, Wobble, Jelly on a plate!

We have had a very exciting week this week in Year 2.

We have been super scientists and exploring what happens when something dissolves, dilutes or freezes.

First we made jelly where we watched the jelly cubes dissovle into the water. We knew they hadn’t disappeared because we they turned the water red! Next we diluted the mixture by adding water. Then we put them in the fridge to set over night. DSC05372 DSC05386 DSC05387 DSC05388 DSC05389 DSC05373

The next day, we made something tasty to go with our jelly – ice cream!

We put lots of ice into a big bag and added salt. When the ice melted the salt dissolved into the liquid which made it colder. Then we put milk and sugar into a smaller bag. We put the small bag into the ice and gave it a good shake! The cold from the ice made our milk mixture freeze into delicious ice cream.

Then we ate our lovely treats!

Year 2 PSHE

To listen, show respect and value the voice of others.

Article 12: Every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them, and to have their views considered and taken seriously.

This term, in PSHE, Year 2 are learning about ‘Living In The Wider World’.  This week we looked at why it is important to listen to others and how it feels when our voice is heard and opinions considered. The children played the ‘Question Game’ and were able to answer the questions and give fabulous reasons.

Why do we look at the person who is talking?

How do we show we are listening?

How do you feel when people listen to what you are saying?

Why is your voice important?

During the lesson we were visited by the school nurse, who discussed ‘Oral Hygiene’ with the children. The children met Lilly the dragon and were able to tell her what she would need to brush her very large teeth, how often she should clean them and get them checked and why it is important to keep her teeth clean and healthy.

Mixing things up!

This week we have continued our Muck, Mess and Mixtures topic.

In class we have been exploring how water mixes with different materials.

We found out that salt dissolves in water, oil and water separate, squash becomes diluted in water and flour makes water get thicker.

The children loved playing with the materials and observing the changes before them.

Ask your child to explain what they were doing using their new vocabulary! Also see what other materials in your house might change in water.

Does sugar dissolve in water? Does lemonade dilute in water?

6’s and 7’s

In this week’s 6’s and 7’s session we talked about each of us being a special, growing person with personal strengths on which to build. We looked at how we are alike and also learnt that each of us is unique.
Children drew pictures of themselves doing something they are good at. These activities helped the children to get to know each other and become comfortable working together as a group.

Loving our pastures new in Year 2!

What a fantastic start to Year 2!

This week the children have begun their Year 2 journey. They have settled straight into new routines and already shown off their fantastic learning behaviour.

Our topic this term will be ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’ where the children will explore how different materials change as they combine and observe what happens. A key investigation will be exploring as water changes to ice and ice melts back into water.

In our first topic lesson, we investigated how to make the best bubble mixture. We decided in our groups what materials we were going to use to make our bubble mixture. Many children chose soap, water and sugar as their mixture. Then we tested our bubbles by blowing through a straw or whisking with a fork.

We found out that the biggest bubbles were made by using washing powder, washing up liquid, water, sugar and blowing through a straw.

Check out the bubbles that we made! Ask your child if they can explain what their group did to make bubbles. DSC05068 DSC05064 DSC05073 DSC05048 DSC05045 DSC05055 DSC05049

Build a bridge…

This week Year 2 have turned themselves into engineers – just like Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We have been exploring the famous bridges and tunnels that he has built and discussing what it means to be an engineer. We decided to become engineers ourselves and design and build bridges. We decided upon a very strange material… spaghetti and marshmallows! We knew the bridges had to be strong so we had lots of fun experimenting with different shapes and sizes of spaghetti.
