Jigsaw – Year 1

Changing me
Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
Circle time We all sang the Jigsaw song: ‘changing as I grow’.  We used Jigsaw jack as the talking object to share any thoughts the children have about the words of the song, focused on how we might change. Reinforced the idea that we all change and that is okay.

Phonics workshop in Year 1

Today in Year 1, we had our Phonics workshop for parents. The children were confident to show the parents how fantastic they are at phonics. We showed the parents how we read words by looking for digraphs and sounding out the words. Then the parents joined us for lots of phonics activities and we had lots of fun!

Into Faith week in Year 1

In Year 1 we have been learning all about Judaism. We wrote non-chronological reports and made posters about the ten commandments. We also learnt about a special festival called Shavout and made ice cream out of bags! We really enjoyed printing in art, where we looked at different symbols that represent Judaism and used paint to transfer it onto paper. We have had a really fun week and look forward to adding all of our work into the Into-faith big book for you all to see!

Relationships- people who might help us
Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
In talking partners children had two mins to think about two people who have helped them at school in the last week.
Working in groups children had sets of the people cards and they turned one card over at a time and agreed on who that person is and then discussed whether that person can help in school or not. Sorted the cards into people who might help us in school and people who might help us outside school.
We used the scenario cards e.g. you have fallen over in the playground and hurt your knee, asked two children to act out this scenario one being the child and the other being the teacher on duty.

Jigsaw – Year 1

Last week we started the session by looking at ‘The jigsaw charter’ reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
With all the children seated in a circle, started off by saying, “I’m… and someone in my family is my…” ( mum, sister, brother, Dad etc.) asked the children in turns round the circle to follow.
We then shared with the children: The family book by Todd Parr. Reinforced the children that there are all sorts of different families and that that is okay. Asked the children who is in your family?
Children had to draw and label a picture of their family.

Hunting for trees!

In Year 1, we have been learning about the different types of trees. We went on a tree hunt and explored the different leaves each tree has. We now know the scientific names that we can sort trees into. We know that the trees that the leaves fall off and grow again are called deciduous and that evergreen trees, the leaves stay green all year round!

What trees can you find?

Jigsaw – Year 1

Shared ‘The jigsaw charter’ with the children to reinforce how we work together.
Calm me
At the beginning of every jigsaw lesson we help our minds calm down so that we are ready to learn.
In groups using the life circle cards children had to sequence from left to right to show the changes that happen as each living thing grows up. Reinforced the idea that every living thing has a life circle and grows from young/baby to fully grown/adult.
We talked about how the children have changed since they were babies (physical changes as well as developmental changes I.e what they can now do they couldn’t when they were a baby).

Jigsaw – Year 1

Last Thursday in Year 1 we began by calming our minds down and preparing our minds to begin learning.

In tell me or show me, the children were shown a clip of spawn growing to frogs, which showed frogspawn and later a frog that the children find. The children were asked how the frogspawn turned into battle frog? What happens and in what order?
