Y3 visit St. Martin in the Bullring

This half term Year 3 have been learning all about Christianity and the Trinity in their Religious Education lessons. On Friday Year 3 visited St. Martin in the Bullring church. This church is one of the most ancient and contemporary buildings in Birmingham. Most of this Grade II listed church is from the nineteenth century. It was built in 1873 and is an example of gothic Victorian architecture, designed by Alfred Chatwin, from Birmingham, who also worked on the Houses of Parliament. But St Martin’s is much older than that. There has been a church on this site since 1290 and there may well have been a simple place of worship here even in Saxon times.

Year 3 were given a tour by Christina, the families’ minister. After welcoming us inside, she told us more about St. Martin He was a soldier who was born in Hungary in the year 316. He never wanted to join the army but did not have a choice. One bitterly cold winter’s night he was riding through the Amiens in France. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a cold beggar huddled against a wall. Martin was so moved by the sight that he cut his cloak with his sword and gave one half to the beggar. That night he had a dream in which Christ appeared to him as the beggar and thanked Martin for clothing him. In response, the young soldier got baptised. St Martin is remembered today for his service to the poor.

Then, she explained about the different parts of the church and what they were used for. Year 3 were able to share their new learning with Christina, especially about baptism. The church has many stained glass windows, all of which have a special meaning. Year 3 were particularly impressive in their recognition of the signs of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

Year 3 found out that one of the windows survived the bombings of the Blitz in Birmingham! This was due to the priest at the time having a vision and insisting that the window be taken down, piece by piece, and stored safely until after the war.

A huge thank you to Christina our knowledgeable minister, Mrs Sheckler and Ms Muhammad for joining us and also Year 3 who were first class ambassadors for St. Clement’s Academy.

Year 6 go back in time at the Black Country Living Museum….

Today Year 6 visited the Black Country Living Museum as part of our Victorians topic.

We followed the trail of two Victorian children, a rich child called Harry and a poor child called Lillian.  We visited examples of the typical houses of where they would have lived and were able to make interesting comparisons between them.  Some of the children got to travel on the trolley bus which they found exciting and we all got to see a live chain making demonstration.

Overall an amazing day out and the children were a credit to St. Clement’s.

Year 1’s trip to the Thinktank Museum

To launch our Science topic about our amazing bodies, Year 1 visited the Thinktank museum. We explored the musuem and discovered  lots of amazing things! We also were involved in an amazing bodies workshop and learnt all about senses and our internal organs. We now know some of the important organs we have in our bodies and what their special jobs are.  We have learnt lots and now ready to build on our learning at school. The children behaved amazingly and have made Miss Tsang and Mrs Nizamis extremely proud!

Year 4 – The Roman Empire

On Monday afternoon, we started our new topic about Romans. We used an atlas to find the 7 different continents of the world.  Using our new knowledge about the Roman Empire we labelled a map of Europe and the countries the Roman Empire invaded. We couldn’t believe how many countries the Roman Empire invaded!

This week year 6 visited the Vihara in Ladywood as part of their topic on Buddhism. Before we visited ,we studied in our RE lesson the Eightfold pathway (Dharma). This is the path Buddhists follow in order to reach Nirvana (enlightenment). We  thought about our own rules to follow and made a Dharma to reflect this.

Making a mummy in Year 5

Year 5 had a great start to their topic with a visit to Birmingham museum and art gallery.

The children learnt to mummify a pharoah by taking out his organs and wrapping him tightly in bandages. They also had a chance to visit the Egyptian gallery and sketch real mummies.  There will be lots of work linked to this in the topic and art lessons over the next half term.

School Trip to the Community Sports HUB

Friday 19th MayDSC_0923 DSC_0776 DSC_0694 DSC_0566 DSC_0516 DSC_0483 Years 1 to 6 went to the Community Sports HUB to take part in sporting activities such as cricket, rounder’s, football, tennis and boxing. Everyone took part in each activity for 45 minutes. Despite the damp weather lots of fun was had by all. It was great to see all the children showing off what they had learnt in their PE lessons. The teachers have said that it was a fantastic day and great to see the children demonstrating their skill set out side of the classroom. This was great for the children’s physical development and we look forward to having more days like this next year.

Samir Y4 “My favourite sport was the tennis because we had lots of space to play which we don’t normally get in school.”

Tavani Y4 “My Favourite sport was cricket because we don’t normally play big games and I won a medal.”

Amira Y3 “I liked the football because it was really good playing on a proper grass pitch”

Reuben Y5 “Boxing was my favourite because the gym was really nice and I enjoyed using the bags.”
