Yesterday we had a great time at Handsworth Fire Station.
Mo showed us the different parts of a Firefighter’s uniform. We found out that they leave their boots inside their trousers so that they can put them on quickly.
The children then dressed up as Firefighters and we were taken on a tour of the fire station.
We saw the smaller fire vehicle and then the big fire engine came back. The Firefighter switched on the blue flashing lights and made us all jump with the loud horn! Next we saw the hose and the special cutting tool. Finally we saw the special pole and two Firefighters slid down it, they went really fast.
This week we have really enjoyed the story Shark in the Park by Nick Sharratt.
The children were great at joining in, especially when it was time to shout: THERE’S A SHARK IN THE PARK! I hope we didn’t disturb the rest of the school with our shouting!
We also looked at a non-fiction book about sharks and found out that there are lots of different types of shark.
Fireworks
Lots of the children had heard and seen fireworks over the weekend so we decided to create some firework pictures.
Maths week
For maths week we have talked about shapes. We are starting to use shape names and also the language of size.
We have been busy in Nursery this week learning through our play.
In Nursery the children choose what activities they would like to and the teachers support and teach them as they play. The children are becoming very independent.
Learning how to make cogs move
Exploring sound using musical instruments
Using the playdough to make pretend birthday cakes
In Nursery this week the children have enjoyed listening to the story of Chicken Licken. They have been practising rhyme by remembering the names of the characters in the story. The children are now able to join in with the repeating phrases with great enthusiasm!
Playdough
The children enjoy playing with the playdough and it is great for developing their fine motor skills. This week the children noticed that the playdough had become very sticky. We decided to make some more. We talked about the ingredients needed and took turns to mix everything together. The children enjoyed using the playdough when it was still warm and used lots of great vocabulary.
Turn taking
It is very difficult to take turns when you are only three! This week the children all wanted a turn on the interactive whiteboard. We talked about taking it in turns and I suggested that the children used the sand timer to help. With a little encouragement they did really well.
This week many of the children have become bug hunters! They have looked for insects under logs and in the wood chipping. We found worms, earwigs, millipedes and a woodlouse. We had to look on the iPad to find out what each insect was. We put them into a bug holder so we could have a close look at them. We also took photographs and drew pictures of what we found.
Our story this week has been The Three Billy Goats Gruff. The children have enjoyed taking on the role of the characters in the story.
We enjoy singing in Nursery. One of our favourite songs this week has been ‘Five Little Ducks’.
Nursery have really enjoyed our book this week: Jack and the Beanstalk. It has been great to hear them all joining in with the repeating phrases in the story “Fee Fi Fo Fum!”
The construction area has been busy this week. Some of the creations have been very impressive. It was lovely to see that the children were determined to complete a task, even when their towers fell they kept on trying until they succeeded.
Some of the children enjoyed exploring what happens with the magnets. They experimented with how to make the magnets attract and repel and how to make paper clips move using the magnet.
The children have been lucky enough to have some new toys to play with. The garage and the dolls house have been popular.
On Monday the children discovered that the play dough had gone sticky so Mrs Ali helped them to make some more. The found out lots about mixing, textures and temperature.
Some of the children are becoming very independent. We have all learned a clever way to put on our coats and these boys remembered to put on wellies when splashing in the water!
The children in Nursery have had a fantastic first week. They have all enjoyed getting to know their classroom, teachers and each other.
The children have been making the most of the sunshine outside by playing in the water, building dens and playing with the hoops and tyres.
Inside the role play area has been a big hit and ‘Our Wonderful Work’ display is already full of some fantastic art work. The sand and play dough areas have been popular too.
We are looking forward to another busy week next week.
This is our final blog for this academic year. The year has been busy and seems to have gone in a flash. Apart from our daily activities we have been on several educational visits which have linked to our topics. Performed in a brilliant Nativity, taken part in the whole school sports day, celebrated The Queen’s 90th Birthday and visited Aston Parish Church, to mention just a few highlights!
We visited Wing Yip. The staff there were so kind to us and made us feel very welcome.
We slid down the slopes in a rubber ring at Tamworth Snowdome!
We met the animals at Ash end House Children’s Farm.
We were all amazing in the Nativity.
We all did our best at sports day at Windley Leisure Centre.
This will be my last day at at St Clement’s as I am taking early retirement. I would like to say a very sad goodbye to all the wonderful staff, parents and lovely children . It has been a joy to work in this amazing little school with a great big heart. I will miss you all but wish every single one of you all the very best for the future. Love from Mrs Shakespeare xxx
