Forest School week beginning 24th September

This week the sun was shining 🙂

Some of the children finished their wood cookies, we wrote one of the Fruit of the Spirit on each one and then made a hole with the palm drill, threaded wool through the hole and hung them in the willow dome.

We also made a rope swing and had great fun using it.  I was impressed with the way the children took turns.

There was also more mini den building going on.

Forest School wk beginning 17th September

This week in our Forest School sessions we used the bow saw.  We listened carefully to the tools talk so that we knew how to use it safely.  We used the bow saw to cut slices of wood from a branch.  we then decorated the slices and wrote a Fruit of the Spirit on each one.  Next week we will finish using the palm drill to put holes in the slices and then we can hang them up in the willow dome.

On Thursday some of the children worked together to make a small den / house for an animal.  It even had a swimming pool!

Outside fun :)

Nursery have been making the most of the wonderful sunshine.  Outside we have a range of activities and resources that the children independently select and use.

Developing social skills.  Exploring shape.  Counting.   Acting out experiences.  Learning new vocabulary.

Which truck will go the fastest?  Which one will go the furthest?  What makes them stop?

Sharing a book together 🙂

The children were singing and playing the instruments together.  They taught me the words to the song and were excited to perform.

Health week in Nursery

Oral health

We read a book about how to make sure your teeth stay clean.  We also sang a song called ‘Brush your teeth’.  We then made our own information books about brushing teeth.

Mental health

We read a book called ‘Sometimes I feel sunny’.  We talked about our feelings and looked at expressions.  We talked about what makes us sad and what makes us happy.  We sang ‘If you’re happy and you know it’

Body fitness

We had a go at some yoga.  The children were very good at trying the different stretches and poses.

Nutrition

The parents came in to make fruit kebabs with their children.  It was a lovely session.  The classroom was filled with the delicious smells of melon, pineapple, mango, bananas and apples.

Perseverance in Nursery

This week I led an assembly with the theme of perseverance.  It made me think about how we all need to persevere with things and how it makes us feel when we achieve something that has been a challenge.

Many of the characteristics of effective learning reflect this.  This week I have been very proud of the way the children keep on trying, even when something is difficult or when a challenge arises.  They are becoming more able to plan ideas and adapt these when needed.

Building a tall tower that won’t fall over.  It took many attempts but the boys showed great determination and achieved their goal.

The girls here all had different objectives but they persevered even when their buildings fell down.  They looked at each other for ideas and supported each other to keep on trying.

Well done Nursery 🙂

Marshmallows, den building and swings :)

The children have really made the most of using the area at lunchtimes this week.  There has been lots of good team work and problem solving whilst den building and lots of patience shown when waiting for a turn on the rope swing.

During a Forest School session the Year 5 children toasted marshmallows.  They learned lots of fire safety information and were very respectful of the fire.  The children really enjoyed the marshmallows  and they found it relaxing to be able to sing songs around the fire.

Busy bees in Nursery!

Every week in Nursery the children do such a wide variety of activities.  Here is just a selection of some of things we have done this week.

Drawing, name writing, number work, hunting for insects, learning to ride a balance bike, watering the plants, learning to write our names and completing puzzles.

No wonder we are all so tired this week!

Forest School

This week the Year 4 children were determined to make a rope swing.  I supported them to find a suitable branch.  They then worked together to get the rope over the branch.  This involved a lot of perseverance and team work 🙂  They really enjoyed using the swing once they had finally completed it.

The Year 5 children were busy doing a variety of activities.

Some children used the loppers and the bow saw to cut down and trim some of the willow branches ready to use them for den building.

Some children used the peelers to whittle sticks and then decorated them.

Some children had a go at using the flint and steel strikers.
