Mixing things up!

This week we have continued our Muck, Mess and Mixtures topic.

In class we have been exploring how water mixes with different materials.

We found out that salt dissolves in water, oil and water separate, squash becomes diluted in water and flour makes water get thicker.

The children loved playing with the materials and observing the changes before them.

Ask your child to explain what they were doing using their new vocabulary! Also see what other materials in your house might change in water.

Does sugar dissolve in water? Does lemonade dilute in water?

Loving our pastures new in Year 2!

What a fantastic start to Year 2!

This week the children have begun their Year 2 journey. They have settled straight into new routines and already shown off their fantastic learning behaviour.

Our topic this term will be ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’ where the children will explore how different materials change as they combine and observe what happens. A key investigation will be exploring as water changes to ice and ice melts back into water.

In our first topic lesson, we investigated how to make the best bubble mixture. We decided in our groups what materials we were going to use to make our bubble mixture. Many children chose soap, water and sugar as their mixture. Then we tested our bubbles by blowing through a straw or whisking with a fork.

We found out that the biggest bubbles were made by using washing powder, washing up liquid, water, sugar and blowing through a straw.

Check out the bubbles that we made! Ask your child if they can explain what their group did to make bubbles. DSC05068 DSC05064 DSC05073 DSC05048 DSC05045 DSC05055 DSC05049

Build a bridge…

This week Year 2 have turned themselves into engineers – just like Isambard Kingdom Brunel. We have been exploring the famous bridges and tunnels that he has built and discussing what it means to be an engineer. We decided to become engineers ourselves and design and build bridges. We decided upon a very strange material… spaghetti and marshmallows! We knew the bridges had to be strong so we had lots of fun experimenting with different shapes and sizes of spaghetti.

Sports day

Year 2 attended sports day today at Sutton Athletic Track. They had a fantastic day cheering on their class mates and competing in events themselves. It was great to see lots of team spirit from the children and we are proud of everyone that took part and tried their hardest!

Well done!

Measuring up.

This week, Year 2 have been focusing on length.

We have been learning to measure using millimetres (mm) and centimetres (cm) and metres (m).

We have explored many everyday objects and estimated their length. Then we checked our estimations by measuring them accurately.  We also made flags for our outside area following careful instructions about measurement. DSC04331DSC04346DSC04338DSC04327

Year 2 know how to party!

Year 2 have worked incredibly hard to prepare for there SATs tests so we decided to have a party to celebrate all of our hard work.

There was music, dancing, games and lots of delicious food! We had such a great time dancing outside in the sunshine.

Miss Smith, Miss Shryane and Miss Akhtar are incredibly proud of all the effort that was put in.DSC04087 Well done Year 2!DSC04095DSC04091DSC04080DSC04088DSC04077

Kenilworth Castle

Year 2 have visited Kenilworth Castle as part of our fantastic castle topic. We had a brilliant day exploring all of the different parts of the castle. We learned lots about what happened in castles and imagined being alive when it was a working castle. We found out how heavy armour is, how tall the towers are and how scary the cellars are!

Year 2 were incredibly well behaved and were brilliant role models for the school – well done! DSC04432 DSC04492 DSC04493 DSC04494DSC04471 DSC04460 DSC04461 DSC04462 DSC04479 DSC04480 DSC04501 DSC05205

SATs

This week, Year 2 have completed their SATs tests. Myself and Miss Shryane are incredibly proud of how hard the children have tried to do their best in their reading and maths papers. They have all done themselves proud and deserve a well earned rest of the coming half term.

In addition to working hard all week, it has also been Year 2’s class assembly. The children spoke clearly and confidently about Ramadan. There was acting, singing and even a costume change!

Well done Year 2!

Spring has sprung in Year 2.

Year 2 have settled well into the new term and we have begun our new topic learning all about plants. We have planted some carrots, chilli, radish, indian cress and even some sunflowers!

We have become planting experts and have been writing instruction texts to tell other people how to plant their seeds ready for spring. If you have any planting questions, please direct them to any child in Year 2!

Year 2 have also been working really hard to prepare themselves for taking the SATs in 2 weeks time. Keep up the good work Year 2.

Sea Life Centre

Year Two had a fantastic time at the National Sea life Centre on Wednesday. We encountered lots of different types of fish and learnt about their different habitats and diets. We saw some amazing Jelly fish, and also visited the Rock pool where we stroked a starfish and were surprised by how it felt. There were so many interesting types of sea life to look at we couldn’t decide on our favourite. Nemo and Dory were a huge hit but we will remember what the staff said about not having these types of fish in our homes. We had a fantastic day and the children (and staff) had lots of fun. We now can’t wait to make our models, pictures and do lots more research on our Beach Combers topic!DSC04106 DSC04116 DSC04094 DSC03693
