This term year 5 are learning all about animal adaptations as part of science. They have learnt that an adaptation is a special skill which helps an animal to survive and do everything it needs to do. Adaptations could be physical changes to the animals body or behavioural changes in how an individual animal or a society do things in their daily lives.
They have created some beautiful drawings of bugs and labelled the different parts for our class display.
Year 5 visited the Botanical Gardens as part of their Topic work this term. They explored the Tropical house, Subtropical house and Mediterranean glasshouse. They learnt about where tropical rainforests were situated, the animals that inhabit them and why they were so endangered. They discovered how rainforest plants grow and adapt to their unique environment. Also, discovered which rainforest plants we eat and which we wear. They had the opportunity to handle live animals, this included stick insect, bearded dragon and Giant African Land Snail.
Last Friday, Year 5 spent the day at Woodlands Adventure. Children had the opportunity to experience a true outdoor setting. They were able to face new challenges and develop new skills. This, in turn, has led to increased self-confidence, motivation and engagement back in the classroom.
Year 5 took part in a range of activities which included:
Assault course
Zipwire
Archery
Paddlesport
These activities encouraged them to develop on their social skills, team building, motivation, courage and resilience.
Last week, year 5 had lots of fun fruit tasting as part of International Week. The class was filled with fruit from countries around the world. They were adventurous and had the opportunity to touch, smell and taste the different flavours of each fruit.
They also created live drawings of fruit. This lesson focused on observational drawing skills using colour.
Still live drawings teaches children how to layout a group of various objects such as fruit and how to shade or colour the drawings. how to look at objects and see them like an artist – with a perceptive awareness of their outline, shape, proportions, tone, colour, texture, form and composition.
As part of International Week, our children in year 5 learnt that there are seven continents on our planet: Africa, Asia, Antarctica, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania/Australia. They learnt that these seven continents varied in size.
They brought in artefacts that represented their cultural background to share with the class. Some children chose to share some facts that they had researched about their heritage while others brought in objects, pictures, clothing and jewellery.
This week year 5 discussed and identified different behaviours which might be bullying.
They discussed and shared the different kinds of bullying and explained how they are different. They were able to understand that bullying isn’t something that happens once rather time and time again and that it is deliberate.
They shared what action they should take if they see or experience behaviour which they think might be bullying.
This week, as part of their topic work, year 5 looked at the feudal system that was introduced into Britain by William the Conqueror. William confiscated the land in England from the Saxon lords and allocated it to members of his own family and the Norman lords who had helped him conquer the country.
We discussed the roles of each member of the feudal society and put them in order of hierarchy.
Year 5 created a picture of a flower by sketching out a flower and colouring the drawing roughly, adding more details as they went along. They needed to add more layers of colours to blend them together to produce their painting. They used oil pastels to create their painting and used their fingers as a method for blending.
