Talk for Writing in Year 1

This week in Year 1, we have started our new Talk for Writing story – Little Red Riding Hood. This is one of our all time favourite’s! We started off the week by writing our very own version of Little Red Riding Hood. We tried so hard!  After that, we decided to look at a different version of the story. We have been learning it through acting out the story using puppets, drawing story maps and adding actions for us to remember the story off by heart!

Year 1’s class assembly

Today we performed our class assembly to the whole school and our parents. Our class assembly was based on inspirational people, so all week we have been thinking about people who inspire us and make us better people. We also thought about what we could do to make a difference, however, big or small.

Pictures to follow.

Spring is here!

We have started our ‘Splendid Skies’ topic with creating art work based around the seasons and weather. We explored the weather we have in each season and showed this in our art work. We have been exploring Spring. We wrote acrostic poems based on Spring which tells us about all the things we see, feel, smell and hear in Spring time.

Exploring Materials!

In Year 1, we have been exploring the best material to make an umbrella for our friend Ted. We all made predictions then performed an investigation. We explored the following materials;  foil, felt, tissue paper and plastic. We used our scientific skills to observe closely to the change of the material once water was dripped onto the material. We found out that plastic and foil were both waterproof, however later found out that foil can be easily ripped, therefore not the best material for an umbrella.

We are looking forward to making our plastic umbrella to keep Ted dry!

Year 1 at Twycross Zoo

On Wednesday, Year 1 visited Twycross zoo. We had a fun and exciting time, even with the terrible wind and the rain! We saw lots of interesting animals in their habitats. Some animals were hiding from us so, we had to look ever so carefully! Mrs Bi loved the pink, elegant flamingoes standing on one leg, and Yousaf really enjoyed seeing the penguins swimming in the water.

In the afternoon, we had a session with one of the teachers called Nicky. She taught us all about what animals eat and learnt all about food chains. We now know all about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. We thought about the animals that we saw in the zoo and were able to identify what they eat. We know that lions are carnivores and zebras are herbivores. We also were so lucky to see a hissing cockroach and stroke a silky, fury chinchilla. We are now looking forward to writing all about our amazing time at the zoo!

Number bonds fun!

This week in maths, Year 1 have been practising their number bonds. The children know the number bonds to 10 extremely well! So, today we used cubes and numicon to find lots of different ways to make 20. The children worked together in pairs to find different ways to make 20. How many different ways can you make 20?

Book Week in Year 1

Year 1 have really enjoyed Book Week! We have taken part in many different activities and read lots of new stories. We have really enjoyed looking and completing work on the story ‘Help!’ by Sally Grindley. We were very excited to actually meet her and ask her some super questions. Our favourite part of the week was celebrating World Book day in our fantastic outfits!

Can you see what we have dressed as?

Science Week in Year 1

The Superheroes needed Year 1’s help! They wanted to find out what would happen to skittles if they were placed in hot water and in freezing cold water. The helpful Year 1’s were eagar and willing! The children made predictions and decided how they were going to conduct their experiment.

They also decided what equipment was needed and wrote a list.

They observed closely to the changes that occurred.

They found out that the skittles dissolved quicker in hot water, and slower in cold water. The children especially loved how the skittles made rainbow colours in the water!
