In Year 1, we have been exploring the season change into Autumn. The children have been interested in collecting natural objects found outside that show us that it is Autumn. A challenge was put into the science area for the children to complete. The children had the chance to sort natural and manmade objects. They are fantastic in noticing the differences between the two!
This week, Year 1 are learning about capacity. Students have learnt through activities with teachers and using their knowledge and vocabulary in their play. Students have explored the difference between empty and full, as well as nearly full or empty. They have also been challenged to find half full and half empty as well.
This half term in Year 1, we will be exploring an author called Julia Donaldson. She has written amazing stories such as ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Room on the Broom’. The first focus book we have chosen is the story called ‘Zog’. We have enjoyed learning to recite the story off by heart using actions.
Year 1 have settled into their classroom and routine fantasically! The children have enjoyed exploring their new classroom and getting stuck into their learning.
Take a look at all the fun things we have been doing.
Year 1 found a magical, tiny door in our classrom. We thought about how the door got there and the children decided as a class that a little fairy had left it there for us. We decided to make fairy gardens for the fairies. We have had a busy week designing and creating our very own fairy gardens. Reception and Year 1 joined together to design and make them. We worked really well together!
Year 1 have had an amazing day at Wyndley Race Track! We enjoyed taking part in the different events. We especially enjoyed the egg and spoon race. Luckily it was a dry day and the sun even decided to show its face!
In Science, we have been exploring plants and trees. We have learnt all about evergreen and deciduous trees. We have been looking at lots of different trees and deciding whether the trees are evergreen or deciduous trees. We went on a tree hunt to find out which trees we have in our school site. Which trees can you see?
To start off our topic ‘Memory Box’ in Year 1, we were reflecting back on our time in Nursery and Reception. We decided to have a picnic, just like we did in Reception. We made healthy sandwiches to eat on our picnic. We followed our designs carefully. We then had a picnic and enjoyed sharing our favourite memories from the past.
In Year 1 we have been exploring 3D shapes. We have been learning the names of the shapes and looking at the properties of the shapes. We made 3D shapes using straws and playdough. We were able to explore how many faces, edges and vertices (corners) each shape has.
In Year 1, we have been designing and making kites. In Science, we have been looking at materials. We tested different materials and decided which material would be the best to make an umbrella. We tested tissue paper, plastic, felt and foil. We found out that foil and plastic were waterproof. But, later decided that foil wasn’t as strong as plastic. We followed our design to make our umbrellas, tested them out. Then we evaluated what went well and what would need to be improved if we were to make them again.
Look at them fly!
