We have made a good start to our new term and already have written our class rules. These are important to us as they help us display good learning behaviours.
Everyday we begin with wake-up shake up ,this really gets our brains working for a good day of learning. Even Mrs Harris and Mrs Austin-Smith take part.
On Monday 3rd July Year 6 took part in a leavers service at St Martin’s church Birmingham. The children took part in the service with other Year 6 children from schools in the Birmingham borough. The service was led by the Bishop of Aston and the Big Assembly Singers. We provided a prayer and a poster showing ‘life in all its fullness’.
After celebrating we visited Macdonalds as a treat for lunch. Our day was fun.
Year 6 performed their class assembly around World Cultures and what it meant to them. They wrote poems and represented culture through art. The children used song to represent world harmony too.
The children dressed in some of their cultural costumes. It brought a sense of belonging and understanding of ‘World Cultures’ to the children of Year 6.
We combined art and history to form the story on our mirror plates. These plates originated from Mexico, they are used to decorate both inside and outside of homes. We researched traditional Mayan and Aztec art and used ideas for the plate. We designed the plates, used tinfoil for the centre piece and etched onto the foil with felt pens. Every plate tells a story.
In science this term we are carrying out various Investigations based around the science of sport. This week we looked at the conditions needed to grow the best turf for football pitches.
In groups we have taken a section turf and over the coming weeks we will have to take care of it and keep careful observations and record these. Eventually we will discuss our findings with the class.
This week we having been looking at e-Safety and we discussed the question, How safe are you?
We set up some role play scenarios and discussed as a class how we should manage our safety. We thought about using aps on our phone and what dangers this may lead to. We decided that no app should be used unless a parent knows exactly what it is.
Ringing and talking on the phone is fine as long as you know the person. Sharing photographs between friends is okay as long as your parents have seen the photo and you have the permission of the person in the photo.
As part of our RE topic this term we were looking at comparing the beliefs of Muslims and Christians.
On arrival at the mosque we were taken into the prayer room where the Iman recited suras from the Qu’ran. We were shown around and asked many questions. The leader was very informative and we left knowing there are many similarities between both religions.
One prayer room has the capacity to have over 2000 people praying at once. This room is mainly used at Eid and Ramadan.
During our Science investigation this week we were looking at these two very important processes that happen within our bodies.
We carried out an investigation using skittles and water to show the process of diffusion. The children in pairs used vegi-gel, inks and blotting paper to produce some abstract diffusion prints.
Why don’t you ask your child to explain these processes to you?
This afternoon Year 6 took part in a street dance and graffiti workshop. This was a much needed break from intense weeks of practice testing and preparation for their upcoming National Tests beginning next week. The children enjoyed dancing and performed their own group routine at the end of the session, they also produced their own graffiti dance logo.
Good luck to Year 6, we are fully prepared for next week. Remember breakfast club begins 0815 Monday 8/5/17.
