Over this half term, Green class have been working to develop their gymnastic skills. We have worked on our individual rolls (forward, pencil and teddy bear), balances (one, two and three point) and jumps. This week we have spent time developing our mirror images with a partner and to then combining our skills to create and perform a sequence.
Green class have reached the end of the Loosing Tale unit of writing. Over the past three weeks we have used actions to help us learn the Tale of Daft Jack, a story written by Laurence Anholt.
We have explored different sentence types to improve our writing, had a go at making some small changes to the original story before re-writing and this week we have applied what has been learnt by creating our own Losing Tales.
Have a look at our story maps and see if you can work out our story ideas.
What is a Losing Tale?
This is a story with five clear parts.
Opening where the main character (MC) has something precious.
Build up MC sets off with the precious item.
Problem MC loses the precious item and has to search for it and face the consequences.
Resolution The precious item is found.
Ending MC vows to keep the item safe and reflects on their feelings or learns a lesson.
Our topic this half term has been focused all around heroes and villains and this week Green class were set a challenge to create and design their own hero or villain.
Lots of discussions were held around the qualities of a hero and also of a villain. This led to Year 3 designing their own and also naming their character. Next lesson we will be using watercolours to paint the background and then using a range of materials to collaboratively create a collage. Look out over the next few weeks to see our final pieces.
I wonder if you can guess if there will be more heroes or more villains designed by Year 3?
This week Green class have participated in the Into Film Festival. This is a free, nationwide celebration of film and education for 5-19 year olds.
After a brisk walk downhill to Aston train station, a quick train ride into Birmingham New Street station and a few more steps around the corner, Green class arrived at the Electric Cinema ready to watch The Little Mermaid.
The Electric Cinema is the oldest working cinema in the U.K. and showed its first silent film in December 1909. Have a look inside this magnificent space and go upstairs to screen 2. This is where Green class sat in comfort on large sofas and cosy reclining seats. http://www.theelectric.co.uk/walkthrough/outside.html.
The Little Mermaid story, especially the setting has given Year 3 lots of wonderful ideas for their narrative writing.
This week Green class have started their Religious Education learning with pass the parcel. Inside each layer was a question which prompted plenty of discussion and sharing of ideas and opinions around the meaning of Christmas.
Question 1: What does Christmas mean to me?
Question 2: How do you celebrate Christmas?
Question 3: Why is Christmas important to some people in the world?
Question 3: When is Christmas celebrated?
Question 4: What is the best part of living in a country that does celebrate Christmas?
In Maths lessons this week Green class have be working hard to ensure they are able to measure accurately to the nearest centimetre. This is in preparation for next week’s exciting Maths Week at St. Clement’s.
It has been a busy week in Green class this week with lots of art and design technology enhancing our learning. Miss Shryane worked with Green class to create volcano models. Hopefully the models will dry over the weekend and then we will paint them and make them erupt!
With our Religious Education learning being all about Diwali, Year 3 have also made their own diva lamps from clay. Divali means “rows of lighted lamps”.People light lots of small oil lamps called diyas or divas. They are placed around the home and in gardens to remember how Rama and Sita were welcomed home.
Hindus believe that by lighting these lamps, the goddess Lakshmi will visit them and bring them wealth.
We used a ‘thumb pot’ design and are now patiently waiting for them to dry so they can be painted in bright, eye catching colours next week.
Read our blog next week to find out how well our volcano models erupted and how we decorated our diva lamps.
Our topic this half term is called Tremors and this week Green class have travelled back in time to 79AD and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii.
Y3 have explored this event through freeze frames and hot seating and discussed how they would have felt witnessing the thunderous blast from the volcano and seeing the pillar of ash shooting from the throat of Vesuvius. Then the raining down of red-hot rocks and thick poisonous gas cloud that engulfed and destroyed the city and its entire population of 20,000 people.
Have a look at our freeze frames and see if you can work out the feelings of Green class.
This half term Y3 are focusing on the key question ‘Would celebrating Diwali at home and in the community bring a sense of belonging to a Hindu child?‘ As a class we have discussed our own ideas and views about what belonging is and this week have continued our learning with finding out what is the story behind Diwali.
After hearing all about Rama, Sita, Hanuman and Ravana’s adventures, Green class worked with a partner to create a story map. Then they used the map to help them keep track of the key events and characters whilst using their puppets to perform and share their understanding of the story.
Ask Green class to tell you the story.
