Wellbeing week in Year 3

This week it has been Wellbeing Week at the Academy. Year 3 have been finding out more about how to stay safe when online. Year 3 have worked to find out more about the SMART rules for staying safe online.

S – Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when you’re chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.

M – Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time.

A- Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, pictures or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!

R- Someone online might lie about who they are and information on the internet may not be true. Always check information with other websites, books or someone who knows. If you like chatting online it’s best to only chat to your real world friends and family

T- Tell your parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone or something makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.

Have a look at our posters on display in our room or here.

Another focus Year 3 had this week has been on positive mental health. The week started by discussing what mental health is and the importance of positive mental health. Year 3 then explored different mindfulness techniques and evaluated which approach from square breathing, listening to sounds of nature or mindfulness colouring helped focus their minds.

Collage fun in Year 3

After designing their own hero, Year 3 have been busy in creating collages. Everyone has been working hard to recreate their designs using a range of media.

It has been great to see children working together to help each other solve problems and achieve the desired effect. Keep an eye out for the finished pieces

Y3’s Link class in Jakarta, Indonesia

Our link class is in a  school in Jakarta which is in Indonesia. We have already been sent videos and emails from our link class and this week we received a very battered parcel which had taken a few weeks to arrive.

Year 3 were most excited and couldn’t wait to see what was inside. To their surprise, our link class had produced posters telling us more about their school.  Year 3 worked collaboratively and helped each with reading and understanding.

Anti-Bullying Week in Year 3

During Anti-Bullying week, Year 3 have spent time finding out more about the different forms of bullying  by role playing different scenarios and thinking about the feelings of others.

Bullying is something that can hurt you on the inside or on the outside. It hurts you on the outside by hitting you and hurting you physically. It hurts you on the inside by name calling or hurting your feelings.

Bullying is done on purpose, it’s not an accident. If someone hurts you during a game by accident that is not bullying, but if every time you played a game they hurt you, or your feelings that would be bullying.

It can aim to hurt a group of people or just one person and can be done by a group or just one person. Bullying happens more than once. Nobody deserves to be bullied. EVER

After exploring different scenarios, Year 3 discussed what a good friend would do / should be like. Have a look at our ideas on display in our classroom.

Reading for Pleasure in Year 3

What a busy first week back it has been for Year 3. We have started our new topics which are Light in Science , incarnation in Religious Education  Heroes and Villains in Topic and Art sessions. Also we are having a big focus on reading and especially reading for pleasure.

Year 3 are being encouraged to pick a book from the class library to take home and enjoy with built in times during the week to read for pleasure. Children are very welcome to bring in their own books, magazines or comics form home. After discussion Year 3 decided that they needed to be comfortable to enjoy reading and also be in a quiet, calm space.

The fall of Icarus in Year 3

This week on art, Year 3 have been exploring the work of Henri Émile Benoît Matisse  31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954). He was a French artist, known for his use of bright colours.

After reading the Ancient Greek myth Icarus and Daedalus, Year 3 interpreted the events of the myth in their own collages in the style of Matisse’s original print. -The Fall of Icarus. The collages were not as easy as Year 3 initially thought. It took a lot of patience, perseverance and collaboration to achieve the end results.

Maths at Work in Year 3

This week at St. Clement’s it has been Maths Week with a special focus on Maths at Work. All classes have been learning more about how maths is used in different jobs. Year 3 have been lucky enough to have a visit from Graham who is the manager of a juice bar.

Graham came in to talk to the class about how he and his team use maths everyday when following recipes to make different juices.  Year 3 found out that it is vital for Graham to be able to measure accurately so that the juice his customers buy will always taste the same.

Graham and his team have to work hard to measure accurately because too much of one fruit can really change the taste of their juices.

Year 3 were surprised how much maths Graham uses in his job from estimating , measuring accurately, and using mental calculation strategies.

A big thank you to Graham for coming into school.

PCSO visit to Year 3

Year 3 had a visit like Year 2 from our local PCSO’s – Police and Community Support Officers Louise and Robbie. They are based at Nechells police station and their main role is to keep the area we live and go to school in safe. They are working in partnership with our community to educate all and are really working hard to make sure that we all feel safe in our local area.

Louise and Robbie reminded us that there are good strangers and bad strangers and that they are good strangers. It is ok to ask a good stranger for help when lost but to always ask them to show their identification badge to check.

Year 3 had homework set by the PCSO’s to learn their full address so if ever lost they would be able to be returned home quick and also that 999 is the number to call if we need the help of the police.

Big Read in Year 3

Big Read this week was a chance for everyone in Year 3 to read together. By pairing up, everyone had a chance to read to a friend and discuss the content of our class reader. These books have been borrowed from the library. It was great to all be able to have the same book and work collaboratively to understand it.

Theseus and the Minotaur in Year 3

This week Year three have been busy learning and exploring their first narrative of the year – Theseus and the Minotaur.

This is an ancient Greek myth and links perfectly with our current topic – Gods and Mortals. It is a conquering the monster tale and is split into five clear parts:

  1. Opening Introduce the main character and all is well.
  2. Build up A monster appears and causes problems.
  3. Problem The monster is difficult to defeat.
  4. Resolution The main character defeats the monster.
  5. Ending All is well again and the main character gets a reward.

This has allowed Year 3 to learn the story by putting actions to the key parts and then retold in the correct order by following a story map. Click on the link below to see our story map

After putting actions to our story, Year 3 explored the characters further through drama. Hot seating, freeze frames and spot lighting really helped Year 3 understand more about the characters.
