On Thursday 8th June 2017 Year 5 visited Blakesley Hall, a timber framed house, in Yardley, Birmingham. We explored the lives of Richard Smallbroke, his family and their servants.
We looked for clues in each room to discover what life might have been like. We visited the kitchen, dining room bedroom and long hall. Have a look at our photos.
Year 4 have been learning some new cooking skills in after school club. They have been learning how to chop safely and this week they made spicy traffic light rice and Braziilan Quorn Picadillo.
They really enjoyed this. Please find attached the recipes for this week and last week.
Year 5 had a very strange character visiting their classroom this week. We were a little scared and confused by their appearance. Their visit marked the start of our new topic, Peasants, Princes and Pestilence. Have a look at the the photo of our visitor and ask Year 5 all about their odd costume and what was happening in and around London during 1348.
In Year 5 some of us have been learning about different types of angles and how to measure them. It was hard at first to use a protractor accurately, but once we mastered the protractor slide it became easier. We also learnt the differences between acute, obtuse and reflex angles. Why not ask your child about the different types of angles?
Finally we have also been learning about the total number of angles on a straight line, angles in a triangle and quadrilateral and angles around a point. Why not ask you child to explain them?
This week Year 3 have been looking at why and how people celebrate the New Year. They have looked at how people celebrate the New Year across the world. The start of the New Year is an ideal time to reflect on the year before and look at all the things we have done whether they have been good or bad. It is also a time when many people make promises to themselves and their families and friends. These families might be to get better at something, make a change to their lifestyle or to help others.
Year 3 looked at some of the things that they enjoyed during 2016 and some things they would like to change or get better at.

This week Green Class took a step back in time and became archaeologists for the day. In the morning we excavated artefacts from the sand, brushed them clan and had to decide whether they were from the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age or another time period. Once we had done this we set up our museum display and discussed the artefacts we liked with our group. We had great fun, excavating in the sand.
In the afternoon we had the chance to experience what it might be like to live as a hunter gatherer. We made an arrow using a flint arrow head, a stick and some string. Next we had a go at making flour from seeds, this was hard work and took over an hour and a half to get less than half a cup of flour fine enough to use. We also had the chance to weave and use a spindle to spin wool. Our las activity was to make a bracelet using animal teeth and beads.
We had a great day experiencing life as it might possibly have been back in the Stone Age period.
Ask Year 3 which part of the day they enjoyed the most.
On Tuesday 29th November 2016, Year 3 welcomed a special visitor into their classroom. Paul, came to help us learn more about rocks and fossils, which we are learning about in science. We learnt about different areas in the country where different type of rock comes from, the different types of rocks and also how the tectonic plates are constantly moving. We then looked at fossils and learnt a little bit about how they are formed, where you can fossil hunting and what you should take with you when you go. We had a great morning exploring all of Paul’s samples. Why not ask us about our favourite types of rocks and fossils in Year 3?
To help us with learning how to write direct speech we have been using role play. Using role play helped us get into character and create a conversation between ourselves and our partner. We then put this conversation into speech bubbles. Then from the speech bubbles writing dialogue using inverted commas. The children explored different situations including
Looking out of a window with their mum or dad.
having a friend over for tea
standing in the dinner line
Being in a maths lesson with their uncle
a rainy playtime with their best friend.
Have a look at our photos and why not have a conversation with Year 3 whilst doing any of these activities and see where it leads you. You may be surprised. We were!
During Art week Year 3 have been using different mediums to create different styles of foxes. We used the tile printing method to create some wanted posters. We looked at the famous Artist Andy Warhol and recreated his famous Pop Art style. First we had to draw our own fox, Mrs Hall and Miss Groom made this really easy by giving us step by step instructions to follow. Then we had to choose really bright, bold colours to make the fox pop and stand out. We also made some origami fox heads, this was our favourite activity of the week.
We also wrote some descriptions of Fantastic Mr Fox and the three mean farmers in our writing lessons and in maths we had to help the farmers create a safety fence for the the chicken house and work out the perimeter of the fence.
During our reading lessons we read and answered questions about the book fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl, who was born 100 years ago.
Today is a special day held to celebrate him and remember all the books he wrote, so at St Clement’s we decided to dress up for this special day
