This week Year 2 found some treasure arrrrrrr! However, there was a problem! It was frozen into ice!
As a class we thought of ways we would be able to rescue the treasure. We agreed that we needed it to melt so that we could free the treasure.
In our science lesson we explored lots of different ways to make the ice melt. Some of us planned what we thought and observed what happened.
Finally we managed to rescue the treasure! We found out that using the warm water helped melt the ice quickly. We also noticed that when we brushed the ice it created heat which also melted the ice.
Year 6 are busy using skills in reading to help them on their way to achieving success in the forthcoming SATs. The children are becoming more competent in recognising and referring to domains in their reading.
In maths too they are working hard and have found new confidence when measuring, calculating, and recognising angles.
Why don’t you ask your child to discuss their learning from this week? Can they discuss angles around a point?

At the weekend the willow dome was completed. The children have enjoyed using it at lunchtimes and during Forest School sessions.
In spring we will water the willow and then leaves will grow.
There were some pieces of willow left from the building of the dome. The children have enjoyed bending the willow in to circles and other shapes and then decorating them with wool. Some of these are hanging in the entrance to the dome.
As part of Child Safety Week, the children learnt all about ‘Pantosaurus’ and the NSPCC campaign. Classes from Reception to Year 6 enjoyed singing along and learning how to stay safe. On Tuesday Reception and Nursery had a visit from Paul to talk about the importance of being safe on the road. This included how to be safe when in a car, on a bike and when crossing roads. The children learnt about different types of crossings including pelican and zebra. They learnt that they have to hold hands with an adult and to keep checking left and right to see when it is safe to cross. Paul demonstrated the importance of sitting in a child seat and to always wear a seat-belt. The children also learnt about the need to wear a helmet when riding a bike. The children would like to thank Paul for teaching us all about road safety!
On Wednesday 31st January 2018, three of our children took part in the ‘Birmingham School Games Talent Competition’. It was held at the Birmingham Hippodrome. Several talents were displayed including a guitar solo, a vocal performance of ‘How Far Ill Go’ and a fantastic gymnastics performance which earned a gold medal and first place! All the children represented the Academy to the highest level and showed what super stars they are!
Year 1 have focused on ‘Keeping Safe at home.’ We have explored the dangers and hazards we might find at home and how to prevent these things from happening. We have created posters to help everyone remain safe at home.

As part of Safety week, Year 5 looked at how to keep our bodies safe from tobaccco, alcohol and drugs. We focussed on the dangers of smoking and researched facts about smoking and cigarettes before discussing our plan of action for the week. We role played children being offered cigarettes and thought about how best to combat this peer pressure. We decided to protect ourselves and other childen from this danger, we would write pesusaive letters to Theresa May urging her to ban smoking. We learnt duirng the week about how to keep ourselves safe.
Last Thursday at the start of the session the children were shown ‘The Jigsaw Charter’ to help reinforce how they work together as a team.
Everyone including the adults, then participated in the ‘Calm Me’ exercise. It was explained to the children that this was to help get their minds ready to learn. We discussed how staying calm and focusing our minds would help us to visualise and create pictures in our minds.
The ‘Open my mind’ activity involved role cards. Children were put into pairs and were given one role card and one blank description card. They then had to list the three most important jobs that the person on the card does in the school community and how they help them to learn.
Then without showing anybody the role card, pairs took turns to read out the job description card so the other children could try and guess who was on the role card.

We then moved onto the ‘Connect us’ section of the lesson. Sitting in a circle in pairs, the children passed around Jigsaw Jino’s feelings bag. One child from each pair then picked out a feeling and had to mime out the feeling to the rest of the circle.
