Sailing boats in year 5

This week, we continued our work with forces in science by investigating water friction.

In teams of 3, we created tinfoil boats with 3 different shape fronts; flat front, round front and triangular front. We used a fan to provide wind and timed how long each boat took to sail across our ‘lake’. The slower the boat, the greater the water friction.

When we had gathered our results, we decided on the best design for a boat.

Y3, tigers and gorillas

This week has been Book Week at St. Clement’s and Year 3 have been busy researching, planning and writing non-chronological reports all about animals. Some of Y3 have focused on tigers and others on gorillas.

These video clips from National Geographic Kids helped to inspire our writing and also art work, along with reading a range of non-fiction texts.

Next week Y3 will be using their line drawings in a Pop Art style.

Book week.

This week has been book week.

Year 2 have been learning how to write information texts.  We have discussed how they are different from stories and that their purpose is to tell people information about things they want to find out about.

We have been learning lots of information about China and writing our new facts into a report.

Did you know?

. China has the biggest population in the world.

. The Great Wall of China is over 13,000 miles long.

. Table Tennis is the national sport of China.

. More people own bikes than cars in China.

. Red eggs are a symbol of birth and are given out at birthdays to bring good luck.

. Noodles represent a long life.

Come and read our reports to find out more!

Harvest Assembly

Thank you to everyone that donated to our Harvest collection.  We got a good selection of items and look forward to dropping it all off at the Aston & Nechells Foodbank.

This afternoon we celebrated Harvest in assembly and assembly started with an explanation about what Harvest is and when it is celebrated.

We were then treated to a short performance from the school councillors telling a story about a man who couldn’t grow crops because of an ogre sending a hot sun and lots of rain to the chant of….

“Fee, Fi, Fo, Fum, extreme weather here I come”

Everyone seemed to enjoy the assembly and singing along to the song, putting their hands up to answer questions and contributing when asked.

All the best for the weekend and Thank You all again for your generous donations.

Visit to the Vihara

This week year 6 visited the Vihara in Ladywood as part of their topic on Buddhism. Before we visited ,we studied in our RE lesson the Eightfold pathway (Dharma). This is the path Buddhists follow in order to reach Nirvana (enlightenment). We  thought about our own rules to follow and made a Dharma to reflect this.
