Fire Safety in Year 4

On Tuesday, year 4 had a workshop with firefighters from Aston fire station. We found out a little more about their important job, played games to identify fire hazards in the home and learnt how to keep safe in the event of a fire. Maryam and Samir even dressed up as firefighters and found out just how heavy the uniform is!

Reception’s trip to Sarehole Mill

On Wednesday, Reception visited Sarehole Mill. First we played in the park and had a picnic. We found two enormous tree which gave us some nice shade to cool us down. After lunch we went into the mill where we joined in with the story of The Little Red Hen. We examined real wheat, looked at the ‘ears’ and tried to get the flour from the grains. Using the flour we had made, we added more ingredients to make some dough. Next, we went inside the mill to see the machinery. Finally we saw the huge oven which can bake up to 100 loaves of bread. Reception had such a great time!

Innovate Gods & Mortals

Year 3 have finally reached the end of their Gods & Mortals topic, with sports days, unexpected closures, bank holidays and a jam packed curriculum it has taken a little bit longer than expected.

On Monday, a mysterious box with a heavy lock is found. A sign on the box says ‘Do not open’. What should YOU do? Year 3 spent time discussing reasons for and against opening the box.  Then they heard the story of Pandora’s Box.  Ask Year 3 to tell you about  the moral of the story? Have you ever let your curiosity allow you to do something you shouldn’t have?

When Pandora opened her box all sorts of evil things flew out so Year 3 decided to create their own boxes and fill them with good things that could be let out! What feelings, hopes and good things would you put into your box?

The next stage was to design their boxes. There were lots of questions for consideration…how big will it be? How will it open and close? Will it have a lock? What colours and decorations will it have? How can you make it special?

Finally, time to use their cutting, sticking and modelling skills to make the box.

Have a look at our beautiful boxes.

Creation and Science

In Year we have been thinking about the question:
Creation and science: conflicting or complementary?

We have discussed Creation as it is written in the Bible in Genesis 1 and 2. We can confidently explain how Christians believe the universe was created.

We have begun to explore the theory of Evolution and how that might differ from the Bible.

We created questions and used a Venn Diagram to see whether we could answer them using Genesis, the theory of Evolution or whether we could look for answers in both.

We are looking forward to exploring the differences of opinion in Christianity and how some Christians interpret Genesis.

Chicks in EYFS

On Monday the children in Nursery and Reception arrived at school to find some eggs had been delivered.  They were in a special machine called an incubator.  These were not eggs to eat, they were going to hatch!

The children watched in anticipation for signs of the eggs moving or cracking.  On Wednesday morning we arrived to see that four chicks had hatched.  The next day four more had joined them.  We then moved the chicks into the brooder box.  It has a light bulb in it to keep the chicks warm.
