In Year One we have been looking at our topic memory box.
We have been sharing memories of when we were babies.
We practised writing the sentences on whiteboards, remembering to use our capital letters, full stops and finger spaces.
Then we were allowed to use pen to write our sentences on leaves.
We then made a memory tree from our leaves as a display in our classroom.
Our P.E. focus for this half term is athletics and this week Y3 have been learning how to pass the baton on safely during a relay race. The wonderful, sunny weather today has enabled us to take full advantage of the MUGA to run relay races and develop this new skill.
Our topic for this term is ‘Land Ahoy’
Yo-ho-ho! Arrrr….me hearties, – it’s a sailor’s life for me!
Last week we started Talk for Writing and we learnt ‘The Story of Pirate Tom’. This week we have created and written our own stories!
On Friday, to celebrate how hard we worked in our Maths SATs, we had a Pirate Party! Look at how much fun we had! We made our own pirate hats, we played pirate party games and we had some yummy party food.
Our new boxing club has been up and running this week with great success. This is a non-contact club and will help develop children’s physical strength, general fitness and self-control. The club is being run for us by two boxing coaches from Pat Benson Boxing Academy, Small heath.
During a DT lesson we designed and created our own kites. On Friday afternoon we went outside in the wonderful sunshine and flew our kites.
Year 4 made telephones with two cups and a piece of string to investigate how sound travels. We discovered that if the string was loose we could not hear each other, but if the string was taut we could, even around corners.
On Tuesday 3rd of May, Year 5 went on a trip to the Butterfly Farm in Stratford-Upon-Avon. The trip was a chance to learn more about the life cycle and habitats of Butterflies and other insects, which ties in with our current topic of minibeasts.
During our trip we were given an educational tour of the Butterfly Farm, which greatly increased our knowledge on the species, along with having the opportunity to explore the farm independently. Children also had the chance to hold and touch butterflies, with some of the group looking like they might be the next David Attenborough.
All the children enjoyed the trip and we are now looking forward to continuing our learning in our topic lessons.
This week we have started Talk for Writing of ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff’. We have had a busy week; re-telling, acting out, making our own story maps and creating our own stick puppets and masks.
We have also been busy creating a bridge just like the one in the story. The children were really creative and thought of lots of different things we could use. We had to make sure the bridge was strong enough for the goats to walk over, and big enough for the nasty troll to fit under it!

On Wednesday, we were able to recall and sequence some of the story in the correct order. However, to help us re-tell the whole story we created a class story map. Mrs Bi helped us draw our story map with her fabulous drawing skills! We also created our own story maps, and were able to retell the story using some fantastic story language and repeated refrains from the story. We really enjoyed getting into the role of the characters, especially the role of the nasty, mean Troll.
We have had an enjoyable week introducing Talk for Writing, and looking forward to adding actions to our story next week!
