Today the weather was perfect for a fire, dry and not windy. We talked about how to keep safe. We remembered how to kneel and what to do in an emergency. Then we all enjoyed toasting and eating marshmallows.

comparing and grouping rocks based on their properties in Year 3
This half term our Science focus is on rocks. and this week Year 3 have been working on comparing and grouping together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties.
Year 3 have been working scientifically by first making their own predictions about which rock from chalk, slate, sandstone, marble or granite would be the hardest. Everyone’s prediction ranked the rocks from softest to hardest. Then each group needed to work collaboratively to decide how to carry out a fair test before having a go and then making observations.
Stay and Play
St. Clement’s Stay and Play
This week, we held our first Stay and Play session, at ‘Free @ Last Community Building’. All the families that attended had a great time and the children enjoyed exploring, learning and meeting others. St. Clement’s Stay and Play runs every Wednesday, (Term time only) from 9.15am – 10.15am, at Free @ Last. Come along and join the fun!
Boats!
How do heavy things float?
We decided that only light things float, but then we thought about boats. How do they float?
To investigate we made our own boats out of play dough and changed the shape to see if certain shapes helped it to float. We found that if we made the play dough into a curved shape, it floated but a big lump of play dough sank. We found out that this was because of air. If you add air into a material it is more likely to float than a dense material with no air it in. Changing the shape of the play dough to a curved boat shape allowed more air into the material so it floated!

Y3 Family Projects
Our topic is Tribal tales and is based around life in the Stone Age. For our family project, Year 3 have been asked to design and construct a settlement . A settlement is a place where a community lives and would have usually been found close to a water source.
Year 3 have really enjoyed creating their projects and we hope our families did too! The attention to the smaller detail has been fantastic.

Science Y6 Classification Systems
During this half term Year 6 will be looking at Classification and how all living things are grouped according to certain characteristics.
The children looked at the works of Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish scientist, who begun to classify living things. He grouped them into main kingdoms and split them into smaller groups. 
Eco-Council
We have an Eco-Council in school. Their role is to help the school become more environmentally friendly.
Last term they helped run our ‘Switch Off Fortnight’ campaign, encouraging everyone to save energy and money by switching of lights and appliances when not in use. Over the two week campaign we managed to save 30kwh of electricity.

Maths fun with the Numberblocks :)
In Nursery we have been using the Numberblocks television series to help us with our number work. This week we made numberblocks one, two and three. We practised counting and using language like big/small and bigger/smaller.
Forest School
This week we practised making waterproof dens with the tarpaulin so that if it does rain during our Forest School sessions we will have somewhere to stay warm and dry.
We were very glad to end the session with a drink of hot chocolate because it was so cold!
