Year 6 visit to Cannock Chase Museum

On Friday 3rd February Year 6 visited Cannock Chase Museum as part of their World War II topic. This was a very enjoyable day with the children experiencing life as an evacuee through role play. Later in the morning, the children took part in a simulated Air Raid.  Suffah had the role of Air Raid Warden and made sure we all got into our Morrison Shelters safely.

Chinese New Year in Reception

Over the week, we explored Chinese New Year and how it is celebrated. We learnt about the different things people do to celebrate and read the story of ‘The Great Race’. We discussed the order of the animals and how they got each year named after them. On Friday, we enjoyed some delicious noodles and prawn crackers. The children had a good go at eating with chopsticks.

St Clement’s in the Community

This week, children from across EYFS, KS1 and KS2 attended St Clement’s Nursing Hospice. The children shared their favourite books, class work and hobbies with the residents.

Working together with St Clement’s Home helps the children to develop their confidence in talking to others, bridges the age gap within the community and gives the children a greater understanding of value, respect and care.

The children were a credit to the Academy and engaged wonderfully with the residents in conversation. On our next visit we will be taking part in the St David’s Day celebrations, so look out for our next post.

Loosing Tales

Green class have reached the end of the Loosing Tale unit of writing. Over the past three weeks we have used actions to help us learn the Tale of Daft Jack, a story written by Laurence Anholt.

We have explored different sentence types to improve our writing, had a go at making some small changes to the original story before re-writing and this week we have applied what has been learnt by creating our own Losing Tales.

Have a look at our story maps and see if you can work out our story ideas.

What is a Losing Tale?

This is a story with five clear parts.

  1.  Opening where the main character (MC) has something precious.
  2. Build up MC sets off with the precious item.
  3. Problem MC loses the precious item and has to search for it and face the consequences.
  4. Resolution The precious item is found.
  5. Ending MC vows to keep the item safe and reflects on their feelings or learns a lesson.

Chinese New Year

On Monday morning we watched a video about Chinese New Year.

We found out that Chinese people get ready for new year by cleaning their house.

We found out that red is a lucky colour.

We found out Chinese people celebrate with Lion and Dragon dances and eating with their family.

We made our role play area in to a Chinese Restaurant.

Classification Keys

This week in Science we have worked collaboratively to produce a classification for living things. Some groups had to classify butterflies others birds and one group had to classify bumblebees.

In order to do this successfully the children had to ask  suitable questions, observe characteristics of the species and classify accordingly. The results were then presented to the class.

Exploring Chinese New Year through our Senses!

This week in Science we have been exploring Chinese New Year through our senses. We used all of our five senses to explore how chinese people celebrate the start of their new year. We have been using our taste buds to try some yummy noodles and prawn crackers and our ears to listen to a Chinese celebration on the ipads. We worked in our groups to think of lots of adjectives to describe what we were smelling, tasting, touching, hearing and seeing.

Year 1 PHSE

This week in PHSE we continued circle time, the other half of the class had to use small mirrors to look at themselves making different faces and discuss it with the rest of the children.
Children worked very well in a team and there was good discussion.

Year 2 PHSE

I’m in PHSE this week we talked about feelings and how they can manage them. We talked about who they can talk to when feeling sad or worried. We also talked about behaviour and how we could calm ourselves down if we ever got angry.
In circle time the children had to use small mirrors to look at themselves making different faces and discuss it with the rest of the children.
